Although very questionable now, this issue was decisive in the 2005 referendum : millions voted NO to protect the French society against what they considered a threat to the "modèle social" by "the heartless Anglo-Saxon market economy".
Although decreasing in votes from 30% to 5% or less (see the evolution since WW2), the Communist party is still very influencial on the whole left, particularly on the French Socialist party which is the only one in Europe which has not formerly given up marxism (when most of its voters did...).
This is why the building of Europe, which put an end to Franco-German wars is such a fantastic historical achievement.
