However, if the parent spanks the child properly when he is young, he probably won’t need to be spanked when he is older.

Perspectives on Discipline: Does Spanking Really Have a Role? - Part I
And spanking is a habit for a majority of American families, according to the results of a study of 3,000 adults last summer by pollster Daniel Yankelovich.
Some may argue that spanking did not increase aggressive behavior in the children observed in these studies but that they were more likely to be spanked because they were already very aggressive.
However, others use spanking as their first "line of attack" believing it is the most effective and quickest way to teach children right from wrong.

And spanking an older child is proof in itself that this form of punishment isn't working: You should be able to control your pre-teen's behavior by reasoning with him, not hitting him.
Unfortunately, while spanking rates for older children have declined, an overwhelming majority of American parents continue to use spanking as a form of punishment for younger children.

Study: Harm Outweighs Benefits of Spanking (washingtonpost.com)
Spanking children can make them temporarily more compliant but causes more problems than it cures by raising the risk that children will become aggressive, antisocial and chronically defiant, according to new research.
Even as several western European countries have outlawed spanking, surveys suggest 94 percent of American parents spank their children by the time they are three or four years old, although that number hides great variability in the regularity and severity of the punishment, as well as the context in which the punishment is delivered.
Both researchers agreed that a spanking delivered in the heat of anger, as a visceral reaction by a parent, was less effective and much more likely to slip into abuse than a spanking that was carefully calibrated and used as a technique of last resort.

As you know, spanking was very common when most of us were growing up, and many people are still convinced that it is a good way to teach children right from wrong.
Although parents often defend the practice of spanking by saying, "It works," research shows that spanking may be effective in the short run in stopping kids from doing naughty things in front of their parents, but it does not stop them from doing things behind their parents' backs.
This is not too surprising in that spanking can give kids two very negative messages: that hitting is a way to solve problems, and that it's OK for a powerful person to use physical force on a less powerful person.
