 Sparaxis grandiflora subsp. grandiflora
Sparaxis grandiflora is indeed an attractive species and it is not surprising that it was introduced to Kew Gardens as early as 1758.
Sparaxis is one of the smaller genera of the family Iridaceae.
He placed it in the genus Ixia, where all Sparaxis species described before 1805 were considered to belong before John Bellenden Ker, an English botanist, transferred the four species described at that point to a new genus, Sparaxis.

 Sparaxis
Sparaxis are closely allied to the Ixias, equally beautiful and varied in colour, but rather dwarfer and compact in growth.
For outdoor cultivation plant them early in September, five or six inches deep, on a sheltered border, in rich, well-drained, loamy soil.
Sparaxis will bloom in March or April and their height is about three feet.

 Forcing Ixia Plants to Bloom
Ixia, Lapeirousia, Sparaxis and Tritonia are all colorful flowering bulbs which were originally native to Southern Africa.
Sparaxis can be grown in the open all year round, even in relatively harsh climates, as long as they are provided with some winter protection.
Follow the instructions given for Sparaxis, although Tritonia is actually slightly more hardy in the open than Sparaxis.

Adam, before I joined this list two years ago - which is to say before I was much aware of the variety of temptations in the southern African flora - I tried various commercial strains of Ixia, Sparaxis, Freesia and Homeria (as they were then called).
My experiences suggested that there were at least two problems to be solved before they would be successful under garden conditions in cold winter areas.
But the winter growers will defeat you - or at any rate, they defeated me. Jim McKenney Montgomery County, Maryland, USA, USDA zone 7, where the rain last night brought out the toads; they were in full chorus late last night.

Besides covering the bare earth, companion plants support the bulbs' stems, and their foliage and blooms supply additional color and texture.

Strange Red/Black/Yellow Flower near Point Bonita. - California Gardening Forum - GardenWeb
This species of Sparaxis, often called the harlequin flower, is just the tip of the iceberg in this genus, they are almost all wonderful, and do so well in coastal California that they can survive in the wild, and naturalize in gardens.
As they mostly come from the winter rainfall areas of South Africa, they can be planted out in areas that do not receive irrigation and do just fine.
It is amazing to me that more gardeners don't plant South African bulbs such as Ixia, Sparaxis, species Gladiolus, Romulea, Freesia, Nerine, etc., when they do so much better year after year with minimal care than the hybrid Tulips, which aren't adapted to our mild climate.
