Descendants of the Sparks family are still in the Ottawa area and were recently in contacted by the Sparks Street Mall Management Board regarding the history of their family.
Sparks Street is home to longtime retail stores and businesses that have been owned by generations of Ottawa families.
It is the pleasant fate of men and women who make their mark on history that they become streets when they die, and that is what happened to me. My name is Nicholas Sparks, and this grand thoroughfare, a drop of the hat from the great Canadian hall of debate, is Sparks Street.

Sparks Street is a street in downtown Ottawa, Canada that was converted into an outdoor pedestrian street in 1966, making it the earliest such street or mall in Canada.
The street is named after Nicholas Sparks, the farmer who, early in the mid-nineteenth century, cut a path through the woods on his holding that would eventually become the street.
Sparks street is far less central to the commerce of the city than Rideau Street or Bank Street.

Of course, they are spinning this all as a big benefit to Sparks Street, which will receive hordes of tourists off the busses in the lot etc., etc. Reportedly, one NCC plan calls for a four-level lot for 560 cars and 25 tour buses.
The Citizen reports that the NCC has hired a consultant, Robert McKinley, to examine four options for traffic on Sparks Street: Leave it as is; introduce trolley buses; allow regular buses; or reopen the street to all traffic.
As the NCC moves forward with its plans for Sparks Street, we'd like to present this handy review of why their plans to demolish several blocks of downtown Ottawa for a plaza, er, suck.

Sparks Street could become an example of the mixed-use development that many say could reshape Ottawa into a more vibrant and more sustainable city.
The Sparks Street Revitalization Project, an effort of the City of Ottawa with support from federal and regional governments, is putting together a call for developers to lease and revitalize the city block bordered by Sparks, Wellington, O'Connor and Bank Streets.
