 Sparky Lyle | BaseballLibrary.com
Lyle pitched briefly for the Red Sox as a rookie in 1967, but not at all in the WS, and in 1968 he began to emerge as their bullpen ace, finishing 6-1 with 11 saves and a 2.74 ERA.
By the spring of 1978, however, Lyle was feuding with Yankee management, irked over owner George Steinbrenner's decision to sign relief aces Rich Gossage and Rawley Eastwick as free agents despite the presence of Lyle in the club's bullpen.
Gossage became the club's closer, and after the season Lyle was traded to Texas in a 10-player-deal that brought Dave Righetti to the Bronx.

Lyle was first signed as an amateur free agent by the Baltimore Orioles on June 17, 1964; however, he never played a game for the Orioles.
Lyle became the Yankees' bullpen ace, and established himself as one of the best relief pitchers of the 1970s, helping the Yankees to three straight pennants from 1976-78 and winning the World Series the last two years.
A noted clubhouse prankster in his playing days, Lyle was known for sneaking into the locker room during games to sit on the birthday cakes prepared for teammates, leaving the imprint of his posterior on the frosting.

 Lyle Speaks
Sparky Lyle pitched today and said that he still wants to be traded.
Lyle said that he is rankled that George Steinbrenner refuses to sit down to speak about his status.
The fact that the Lyle won the American League Cy Young Award last season and was a major reason that the Yankees became World Champions did not deter the Yankees' owner from adding two top relief pitchers.

 It's All About Money
Lyle, who signed a three year contract for 1977-1979 worth about $420,000, was pivotal in the Yankees becoming 1977 World Champions, which prompted the Yankees' owner to reward Lyle with a $35,000 bonus as well as a one year extension on his contract worth $140.000.
Lyle, realizing that his deal paled in comparison to his new teammates and that he would pitch a lot less, has requested that the Yankees trade him to a team where he would pitch often.
Lyle said that Steinbrenner asked him where he wanted to go, since as a player with ten years in the majors and five years with the same team, Lyle can reject any proposed trades.

Lyle immediately led the AL with 35 saves for the Yankees in 1972 while recording a 1.91 ERA, and he added 27 saves in 1973, a career-low 1.66 ERA in 1974, and an AL-best 23 saves in 1976 as the Yankees won the AL championship.
In 1977 Lyle was even better, winning 13 games and saving 26 (second in the AL), then adding a win in the WS as the Yankees beat the Dodgers in six games and Lyle captured the AL Cy Young Award.
