Sparrowhawk - a top predator - The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
Some people are worried that sparrowhawks eat too many small birds and cause their population to fall or even become extinct.
The sparrowhawk population was decimated by pesticides entering the food chain in the 1960s and 70s and songbirds numbers remained the same in the hawks' absence.
It is also worth remembering that sparrowhawks and songbirds have existed side by side for thousands of years without any detrimental effect occurring on the populations of the songbirds.

One was unsuccessful but on the third occasion another sparrow was taken and this time the sparrowhawk continued up into the Oak tree to deal with its catch, where the first picture on the right was hastily taken.
The first sighting of the Sparrowhawk in 2003 was in April, and it was seen once each in May and June, each time as a brown shape passing through the garden.

 Sparrowhawk, Accipiter nisus
Quarry is eaten on the ground or on a stump, the hawk standing with both feet on its victim, drooping wings to form a tent and spreading its tail as if to give support.
It could regularly be seen sailing overhead as it moved to a new hunting ground, or be glimpsed threading its way among the trees in a wood — rapidly but silently — looking for an unsuspecting bird.
No doubt the element of surprise plays a large part in their capture of prey, but sparrowhawks are capable of performing remarkable pursuits and captures of such fast-flying birds as the redshank.

The effects of persecution and pesticides devastated the Sparrowhawk population back in the 1960s and it has only been in recent years that this species has returned to its natural population levels.
Sparrowhawks are specially adapted to feed on birds.
Because of this it is extremely unlikely that Sparrowhawk predation could cause the long-term decline of songbirds that we have seen.

 British Garden Birds - Sparrowhawk
The Sparrowhawk's hunting technique relies on stealth; it usually watches from a perch among cover for prey, then flies fast and low, again using any available cover, so that it can then seize its intended prey with complete surprise, but if it misses, lengthy chases can ensue even among trees and undergrowth.
Both adults feed the young birds, though the newly-hatched are usually fed by the female with the male hunting and bringing the food to the nest.
The Sparrowhawk population crashed because of the use of organochlorine pesticides, such as DDT, in the 1950s and 1960s, which causes a thinning of the egg shell that cannot then take the weight of the incubating female.

So I should hope, because not only would you have been breaking the law - sparrowhawks have been protected since 1954, by the way - but in killing your doves it was just doing what comes naturally to it for which it should not be condemned.
The average intake of a sparrowhawk is 2 or 3 small birds (sparrow-sized) per day, but if one takes a collared dove and stuffs itself, then it may well not need to feed the following day.
I am well aware that this is the normal behaviour of sparrowhawks, and I do not endow them with any sort of percieved demonic behaviour, but it does distress me somewhat to see it happen, as the doves give me so much pleasure.
