  Spartan (2004)
Spartan continues his trend of interesting and crisp dialogue and fascinating characters.
Val Kilmer plays perhaps a member of the Secret Service, or perhaps he is just one of those covert operatives that is so good at what he does that he is just an invisible spook who shows up to do a job that others have trouble with.
I think this is the fundamental difference in a film like Spartan and many other less intelligent films that try to glamorize political espionage thrillers.

  STS-95 Payload: SPARTAN 201-5
SPARTAN 201 is a free-flying payload that will study the solar wind and the sun's corona to increase our knowledge of our star's effects on the Earth.
The SPARTAN project offers the scientific community an intermediate capability for conducting investigations in space between that afforded by small payloads that remain in the orbiter and larger satellites that orbit the Earth for long periods of time.
The SPARTAN project was conceived in the late 1970s to take advantage of the opportunity offered by the space shuttle to provide more observation time for the increasingly more sophisticated experiments than the five to 10 minutes allowed by sounding rocket flights.

The Spartan, however, could point to Spartan society and argue that moral values and human courage and strength was as great as it was before civilization.
At the top was the Spartiate, or native Spartan, who could trace his or her ancestry back to the original inhabitants of the city.
For all practical purposes, Spartan government was the ephorate, for these five men led the council, ran the military, ran the educational system, ran the infant selection system, and had veto power over everything coming out of the council or the assembly.

Spartan 400, Spartan 250 and Spartan Lite expand on ground systems and flight hardware which was developed for Goddard’s Small Explorers Project, and incorporate additional innovative technologies to effectively lower the cost of development.
The Spartan 400 design allows the science community to add a new technology experiment to the carrier, even late in the development flow, because the mass and volume are less constrained on the Space Shuttle than on expendable launch vehicles.
The Spartan 250 carrier is carried into space by the Space Shuttle, deployed and operated via ground commands as a sub-satellite, retrieved on the same mission and returned to the principal investigator for subsequent reuse.

When Talos finally learns that he is both a Helot and a Spartan, he is harassed by a final and decisive decision; the decision between whether he should pursue the footsteps of his noble father and brother, or whether he should lead the people that once raised him and gave him a chance to live.
The other Spartans are not much stronger and the plot feels a trifle contrived as we follow Talos from slavery to heroism and then to the point where he must choose a path between the two.
in Spartan, VMM vividly described the spartan way of life and all the historical happenings that surrounded the spartan legacy, from the suppresion of the helots, the persian invasion, the famous death of King Leonidas and his 300 spartans, the earthquake that prompted the helots to revolt and the subsequent battles.

The freedom and greater respect for Spartan women began at birth with laws that required female infants and children to be given the same care and food as their brothers—in contrast to other Greek cities, where girls were frequently given less and lower-quality food.

 IGN: Spartan Review
June 8, 2004 - The Spartans were a tough lot, running about the Mediterranean in their skimpy togas no matter how cold those Greek winters got and fighting anyone who dared cross the line into their territory.
Indeed the Spartans were the best Greek clan when it came to physical prowess, fighting off an entire Persian army with less than a hundred men according to historical legend surrounding the battle of Thermopylae.
I'm not quite as tough as the Spartans, but at least I was able to have a look at their game instead.

The thing that makes David Mamet’s 'Spartan' so thrilling and exciting to watch is not the story...but the specific way that he has chosen to tell the story.

This, coupled with illegal drugs injected into the Spartans during their Spartan augmentations, made the Spartan-III's sometimes as vicious and unstoppable as the Brute warriors they faced in combat.
