In Greek mythology, Spartes or Spartoí (in Greek Σπαρτοί, literal translation: "sown men", from σπείρω speírō, "to sow") are a mythical people who sprang up from the earth when the teeth of the dragon of Ares were sown.
Cadmus arrived in Thebes after following a cow at the urging of the oracle at Delphi, who instructed him to found a city wherever the cow should stop.
In the motion picture, Jason and the Argonauts, the Spartes are depicted as living skeletons.
