Spasim (1974) The First First-Person-Shooter 3D Multiplayer Networked Game
Spasim was written for the Champaign Urbana University of Illinois PLATO network which had hundreds of real-time graphics terminals across the US and some in foreign countries.
Spasim was a 32-player 3D networked game involving 4 planetary systems with up to 8 players per planetary system, flying around a space in which the players appeared to each other as wire-frame space ships and updated their positions about every second.
I began work on "spasim" (I naively intended for it to be pronounced "space sim" but players of the game quickly christened it "spasm") while helping University of Iowa art professor Leif Brush establish that institution’s first computer art class in January of 1974.

 First-person shooter
The term first-person shooter derives from the game's first person perspective, and from the fact that the gameplay tends to emphasize shooting.
The original FPS was the game Spasim[?] published in spring of 1974.
Spasim lacked even hidden lines but it was multiplayer over the world-wide PLATO network[?].

First-person shooter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In contrast, the development of Spasim is much better documented, and the dates more certain.
Multiplayer capabilities, with players attempting to shoot each other, were probably added later in 1973 (two machines linked via a serial connection) and in the summer of 1974 (fully networked).
Spasim was originally developed in the spring of 1974.

Gamasutra - 'Educational Feature: A History and Analysis of Level Design in 3D Computer Games'
Bowery recalls that Spasim, short for Space Simulation, was originally released in March of 1974, but locating documentation of the exact dates for the release of many PLATO games is very difficult since little conclusive documentation exists.
Bowery claims that Spasim is, at the very least, the “intellectual genesis” for a number of other 3D computer games, such as Silas Warner’s PLATO game Airace.
While the ships in Spasim were wire frame polygons that one could see through, the walls of the labyrinth in Maze War used a set of algorithms to eliminate any polygons that would not be visible to the player, lending an impression that the walls were solid (Thompson, slide 10).

Snipes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For many years, Snipes has been bundled with Netware, and recently, it has been officially credited as being the original inspiration for it.
It has been suggested that in 1983, Drew Major and Kyle Powell probably played the world's first over-the-network deathmatch with Snipes, although multiplayer games which involved different players at different terminals had been around for almost a decade, going back to Spasim in 1974.
The objective of the game is to control your creature by moving it around a maze to destroy snipes and their hives.

EDIT 6100 - Myoungjin Yang Tollett
Two games are commonly credited as the first: Maze War (possibly 1973) for the Imlac PDS-1 had 8-player networked multiplayer, and Spasim, a 32-player networked multiplayer PLATO game, pioneering examples of early multi-player 3D first-person shooter game.
The game, called SPASIM, was written by Jim Bowery and used a first person 3D perspective and it was networked for up to 32 players.
Jim began working on "spasim" (it was intended for it to be pronounced "space sim" but players of the game quickly christened it "spasm") while helping University of Iowa art professor Leif Brush establish that institution's first computer art class in January of 1974.

Failure modes and operational contingencies can be evaluated allowing optimization for a range of mission scenarios.
The payloads and subsystems are simulated, using a hierarchy of graphical models, in terms of how their functions affect resources such as propellant, power, and data.

Wolfenstein 3D was the first true FPS, in the current sense, while Spasim may have been a basis of sorts, it was not really a FPS per sé.
It was more along the lines of a simulator, especially with the second release, which you can view details on at the link to some guy's personal page that's offered from the wikipedia link TheChort offered.

1974: Both Maze War (on the Imlacs PDS-1 at the NASA Ames Research Center in California) and Spasim (on PLATO) appeared, pioneering examples of early multi-player 3D first person shooters.
It is believed to be the first network game ever written for a commercial personal computer and is recognised alongside 1974's Maze War (a networked multiplayer maze game for several research machines) and Spasim (a 3d multiplayer space simulation for time shared mainframes) as the precursor to multi-player games such as Doom and Quake.
The true modern adventure game would be born with the Sierra King's Quest series in 1984.
