		Spaulding from the date of their marriage in 1880 until 1920, whe n they moved to their present home on South Center Street.
		Spaulding was with the State Tax Commission for four years and had much to do with Michigan's revision of assessed values.
		This cabin was the first house in Hartford Township and was occupied by him on the hunting trips in which he ranged the line of swamps from the Dowagiac to the B lack River.

	History of Chickaming Township, Berrien County, Michigan
		The township is watered by the north branch of the Galien River, which enters in the lower part of section 12, and passes diagonally through sections 13, 23, 22, 27, 29, and passes out in section 29.

		It was named after Phineas Spaulding, who, with his wife, had settled on a farm in 1837, and who was the first justice of the peace elected in the township.
		Phineas Spaulding and his son-in-law, John Barter, also a pioneer of Spaulding township, took an active interest in Salina, the village founded on the Penny farm, and it is said, that to these two men, in a measure, is due its existence.

		Just prior to the May 18, 1998 Board of Trustees meeting, the Township's three full-time officials were advised by the Township's Water and Sewer Department as well as the Township's engineering firm, Spaulding DeDecker Associates, that the Township Board should consider a sewer relief plan to help eliminate the use of the emergency pumps.
		The Township Board voted on May 18th to accept the recommendation made by the Water and Sewer Department and Spaulding DeDecker to proceed with plans for a relief sewer to help correct the situation.
		The Township originally approved the installation of the emergency pumps in 1980 as a means to help prevent sanitary sewer backups in homes in the south end where footing drains as well as downspouts were routinely hooked to the sanitary sewer system during the 1950s through the mid 1970s.
