Originally mining the power-pop vein, as evidenced on their "Grassroots" EP which was recorded in late 1994 for a shoe-string budget, which is quite noticable production-wise but suited the band's style at the time, capturing a greatness in its simplicity.
Spdfgh got their songs into some Australian high-profile films with "Steal Mine" being included in the movie and soundtrack album of "Love And Other Catastrophes" and "Hey Freaky Stripper" and "Gun" included in "The Well".
A huge loss to music, Spdfgh were a truly great band who had an original sound and style and were impossible to make comparisons to.

Christening themselves Spdfgh (pronounced spuh-duh-fuh-guh; it was a string of letters someone's older brother was trying to memorize for a chemistry exam), they'd skip school to busk for change, playing covers by their favorite Australian bands, like the Hummingbirds and Ratcat.
Spdfgh eventually expanded their repertoire to include songs by the Cure, the Ramones, and the Breeders, and in time began writing originals in a noisy indie-pop vein.
While Bowers was in her final year of high school some members of the Hummingbirds recommended Spdfgh to Nic Dalton, who ran an indie label called Half a Cow.

Taking a que from the likes of the Cannanes, the Pastels and Mudhoney, Spdfgh continued their relationship with Dirt, which resulted in the 1995 EP Grassroots and the full-length Leave Me Like This two years later.

Their pop deconstruction was an ebullient, spartan and spunky affair, and it says much about Australia, culturally and musically that Spdfgh felt like calling it a day such a short distance into their career.
Emerging from Chicago close to a decade on Tania Bowers is as far from her musical roots spiritually as she is geographically.
The tight, punchy indie-pop of Spdfgh has been eschewed in favour of tone and texture on what is essentially Bowers’ solo project, title track ‘Boltanski’ billowing smokily around her quiet, dulcet vocals.

The more rigorous scheme, W2 (Weizmann-2) theory, contains no empirical parameters at all and yields a mean absolute error of 0.22 kcal/mol, which is lowered to 0.17 kcal/mol for molecules dominated by dynamical correlation.
It involves CCSD calculations in spdfg and spdfgh basis sets and CCSD(T) calculations in spdf and spdfg basis sets.
On workstation computers, molecules with up to three heavy atoms can be treated using conventional coupled cluster algorithms, while larger systems can still be treated using a direct CCSD code.

It may come as a surprise then that Tania cut her musical teeth in Australia as part of the vowel-free monikered Spdfgh (a string of letters someone’s brother tried to memorize for a chemistry exam), an all-girl indie-pop outfit she formed whilst still in high school with her sister Kim.
Specialising in a unique brand of noisy pop, the band charmed Australia from end to end, playing shows with almost every big time indie band to visit Australia and signing their first record deal before completing their final year at school.
Eventually ending up on a major, after a few line up changes and a great deal of pressure to change their music into something more palatable to mainstream tastes, the fun stopped, and Spdfgh decided to call it a day.

 Cyclic Defrost - Issue #006 (December 2003) - Via Tania - Under a Different Sky (Trifekta/Festival)
None of the forms offered overpower each other: the first single, Lightening & Thunder, is a lovely sculptured song with a colonialist twist in the reserved harmonium lurking behind the chorus, even reminding me of the Bad Seeds (or maybe Blackeyed Susans) in part.
The Rising sounds like SPDFGH revisited, with rockout guitars lifted straight from the golden era of Sydney indie-rock (1992 - 1996).
Tania Bowers provides a autobiographical focus absent from other obvious comparisons (eg Tortoise), and of course, all the tracks revolve around her idiosyncratic vocals and lyrics.

This is from the same album, though closer to what I think of fondly as their earlier "corporal punishment" style.
Fourth track is by Spdfgh, a brat-pop band whose members went straight into the recording studio from school, ending up with several releases on HAC in the mid to late nineties (hmm, another "S" band - don't worry, the sound you can hear now is just me shuffling my prejudices around).
Even dreamier concoction from former Spdfgh bassist Tania Bowers, who in keeping with tradition has someone else actually playing bass on this track.
