'Speaking In Tongues' was released in 1983, after a period in which all band members released solo material.
Byrne's radio-preacher character from 'Once In A Lifetime' (on Remain In Light) made his come-back in 'Slippery People', were Byrne used this persona to launch a gospel-style call-and-response with a sheepish chorus.
On 'Swamp', Byrne's character metamorphosed into a frightening, half-cracked voodoo man. On the tour that followed the album's release, Byrne performed 'Swamp' with madness in his eyes, oozing up and down the stage with one leg dragging behind him.

An album that everyone but me seems to love, "Speaking in Tongues", the first Talking Heads album in three years when it came out, was also the first album since their debut not produced by Brian Eno, with the band taking over productions duties.
This album (and the rest of the band's studio catalog) has recently received reissue on dualdisc and remastering with bonus tracks-- the sonic upgrade alone is worth the extra few dollars and I'd recommend that issue over this one.
Yes, yes, this is the band getting deeper into the funk, but Speaking in Tongues just doesn't work for me. For one, the vocals (on most of the cuts) are muddled and mixed too low for my taste.

What’s obviously executed exceptionally well with this album are the twisted sonic distortions: very tastefully integrated, and musically executed.
There are two things I don’t like so much about this album; the tracks are all mixed, and many tracks build too slowly, and I think the latter is the explanation for the prior.
I expected this album to be more progressive than Cosmosis, while it isn't similar to Cosmosis, it isn't "progressive".

Through the years, the band's sound evolved to encompass far more: After three albums they became a duo and esentially did away with vocals, and released another string of four albums for the Island label that are monuments of inventiveness, although seldom fully appreciated by those who cut their teeth on the first three.
Their best album in many years, it is a return to their progressive years, it even includes an improv with some orchestra members, reminding to their early 70's releases.

Since their debut CD in 1989, The Holmes Brothers have explored an earthy, bluesy soul sound with a strong influence of gospel.
"Speaking in Tongues," the trio's Alligator Records debut, touches on all of the group's influences, but puts the accent on gospel.
Yet "Tongues," ably produced by Joan Osborne, demonstrates how effortlessly the lines between blues, soul and gospel cross.

The common denominator behind all of these pursuits, of course, was the propulsive grooves that underscored them, and Talking Heads’ fifth studio effort Speaking in Tongues effectively incorporated all of these sojourns into its essence.
If Remain in Light proved that Talking Heads didn’t need to sound quite so fidgety, Speaking in Tongues demonstrated that it could craft its own, distinctive brand of pop music that was suitable for a dance floor.
Given the myriad of sonic effects that splatter the contents of Speaking in Tongues, its incarnation as a surround sound DUALDISC is undeniably rewarding.

For an album with "Rock and Roll" in the title, there is very little rock to be found.
While it does have its somewhat-addicting tracks such as "Speaking In Tongues," "Burn and Shine," and "You Got No Room To Talk," some of the tracks (IE: A few ballads) tone the “rock” sound that the album is supposed to have right down so it is not heard.
Overall, the album is fairly enjoyable, but I can’t really see it having a permanent spot in my CD player anytime soon.

The Heads let their hair down a bit more here than on REMAIN IN LIGHT, but while the tone is a bit less serious (as on the party-starting "Burning Down The House,") the highly developed conceptual sensibilites of Byrne and company are still at work, even without the assistance of former producer Brian Eno.
Some of the previous album's airy abstractions are stripped away here, to make more room on the dance floor.

Talking Heads found a way to open up the dense textures of the music they had developed with Brian Eno on their two previous studio albums for "Speaking in Tongues", and were rewarded with their most popular album yet.
Some of his charming goofiness had returned since the overly serious "Remain in Light" and "Fear of Music", however, and the accompanying music, filled with odd percussive and synthesizer sounds, could be unusually light and bouncy.
Despite their formal power, Talking Heads' last two albums seemed to have painted them into a corner, which may be why it took them three years to craft a follow-up, but on "Speaking in Tongues", they found an open window and flew out of it.
