Speaking in tongues is not shown here, or anywhere else in the New Testament, as ``ecstatic utterances.'' It is speaking in languages, sometimes understood by others, by the ability of the Holy Spirit.
SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS A `PRAYER LANGUAGE' Besides being the sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit to the church, speaking in tongues is also a `prayer language' which a believer may use as a means of praise and worship to God.
Speaking in tongues in prayer to God is, in a way, a continuation of speaking in tongues as a sign of the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Though both the speaking in tongues as the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Ghost, and as a gift, are the same in essence, they are different in administration and operation.
When God tames your tongue, you are under the control of the great God of the heavens, you are in the hands of the Almighty and conquered by Christ, you are endued with a spiritual force from on high and empowered for His service.
Paul said, "He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues EXCEPT he interpret that the church may receive edifying." If speaking in tongues is limited to speaking to God and not to men, Paul would have been in flagrant contradiction with the Holy Spirit who had inspired him to write this conclusive text, "For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God" (I Cor 14:2).
This indisputable evidence of the total absence of speaking in tongues in the life of Jesus disappoints certain defenders of this doctrine to the point that, in order to save face, they are obliged to expose themselves to the twisting of the Scriptures to their own destruction (II Pet 3:16).
These "tongues of fire" went out, not because that which is perfect came but because of a lack of fuel, lack of the presence of "this people" (the Jews), and especially their unbelief which made them oppose the salvation of other peoples.

It is used to refer to the physical organ of the tongue as in James 3:5; once in reference to the flames of fire shaped like tongues (Acts 2:3); at least once in a metaphorical sense when referring to speech as in the statement, “my tongue (speech) was glad (joyous)” (Acts 2:26).
In their misuse of speaking in tongues they were showing their immaturity, a behaviour pattern which characterized the believers at Corinth.
Speaking in tongues was no mark of spirituality, because the Corinthian church was unspiritual, having manifested carnality (3:1-3) and even gross sin (5:1).

I know people who testify that speaking in tongues has been the great liberating experience of their lives, but juxtaposed with them are the great many others for whom speaking in tongues has been an excuse to withdrawal from confronting the realities of a suffering and divided world.
To say that speaking in tongues is a harmless practice, and is all right for those who want to, is an unwise position when information to the contrary is evident.
But to equate much speaking in tongues with advanced spirituality is to reveal one's misunderstanding of Bible truth, and to reveal one's willingness to be satisfied with a deceptive and dangerous counterfeit.

As far as I can tell it is a reissue of a novel that was actually released a few years ago and is being reisssued to capitalize on Deaver's recent surge in popularity.
Although SPEAKING IN TONGUES lacks the deep intensity of some of Jeffrey Deaver's previous novels, the story line remains an exciting thriller.
