The atlatl (pronounced ät-lät-ŭl or more authentically with two syllables ['a.tɬatɬ]), or "spear thrower", is a tool that uses leverage to achieve greater velocity in spear-throwing, and includes a bearing surface which allows the user to temporarily store elastic energy during the throw.
It is held near the end farthest from the cup, and the spear is thrown by the action of the upper arm and wrist.
The word atlatl is derived from a Nahuatl (the Aztec language) word for "water thrower," as it was most commonly used for fishing.

The spear thrower may be humankind's oldest mechanical hunting weapon; they have been in use since the Upper Paleolithic (20,000 years).
It has been suggested by some archaeologists that the bâton de commandement is a precursor to the spear thrower (although archaeologists are not in agreement on this point).
Some bâtons de commandement show microwear consistent with their use as spear throwers, but no conclusive evidence has yet been found, and there are other theories about their function, the most common being that they were used as spear straighteners, although there is no direct evidence that this was the case.
