  Special Atomic Demolition Munition
The Special Atomic Demolition Munition (SADM) was a United States Navy and Marines project that was demonstrated as feasible in the mid-to-late 1960s, but was never used.
The project, which involved a small nuclear weapon, was designed to allow one individual to parachute from any type of aircraft carrying the weapon package that would be placed in a harbor or other strategic location that could be accessed from the sea.
The main one was the Mk-54, a cylinder 40 by 60 centimetes and weighed 68 kilograms, fired by a mechanical timer it had a variable yield from 10 tons up to one kiloton.

SADM was also used as the warhead on the short-range Davy Crockett Anti-Personnel shell.
SADM is tiny and lethally efficient: its tightly controlled 0.01 kiloton atomic yield generating the same explosive blast as ten tons of TNT, from a package small enough to send by motorcycle courier.
Unluckily for the public at large SADM also produces quantities of localized radiation, which can be detected by reading the ultraviolet spectrum in the immediate vicinity of the blast, but few workers in London or New York have access to the scientific equipment needed for such specialized monitoring.

Atomic bomb: two main types are used, fission bombs (uranium or plutonium-based) and fusion bombs (hydrogen-based).
In a plutonium bomb, a subcritical mass of plutonium-239 is packed with a mantel of explosives that condense a heavy layer of inert tampering metal which passes the impulse on to the plutonium core which, in turn, becomes critical and enters a series of chain reactions, whereby a beryllium layer reflects the neutrons.

With laboratories and technical structures, only 20/30 kg of enriched uranium can build an elementary atomic bomb but a serious nuclear threat could be built also only with contaminated devices, ‘dirty bombs’ made with conventional explosive of which detonation sows highly radio-active on surrounding area.
The Russian intelligence (which has noted some attacks against military and civil atomic deposits, all rejected from security services) already in 1996 launched the alarm for a possible atomic threat built from nuclear waste coming from civil and military reactors ended in hands of Chechen Islamic guerillas related to the Al Queida.

Nuclear-capable ground artillery pieces were gradually replaced by increasingly accurate, nuclear carrying missiles and aircraft.
The 155 millimeter version, which became the standard issue, had a maximum range of 2.49 miles and could be fired from either a ground tripod mount or from a specially designed jeep mount.
