The overseas countries and territories (OCTs) are 21 countries that have a special relationship with one of the Member States of the European Union: 12 with the UK, 6 with France, 2 with the Netherlands, 1 with Denmark.
Although OCTs are not subject to most parts of EU law, Articles 182-188 of the Treaty of Rome, OCTs are - in theory at least - subject to restrictions on their tariff regimes with the European Union and EU law in the area of freedom of establishment.
EU legislation is suspended in the Turkish northern part of the island, also known as the internationally non-recognised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, after a referendum on reunion failed in the south.

Generally speaking, the EU would be happy for Iceland, Norway and Switzerland to become full members (Liechtenstein poses an issue due to its small size); but the majority of the population of each of these countries opposes membership at present.
The two future members Bulgaria and Romania (set for 1 January 2007) are also included in the table, as are the official candidates and officialy recognised potential candidates.

Most European Free Trade Association members are parties to the EEA-treaty (which set up the European Economic Area), which means that they are participants in many aspects of the EU single market.
It is hoped by some that eventual membership of states that are currently politically unstable might help deal with tensions resulting from earlier conflicts such as the Yugoslav wars and the Cyprus dispute, and help avoid such conflict in the future.
