 | | A human specimen consists of any sample of hair, skin, cells, blood, tissue, organ, bodily fluid, excreted or secreted material or derivative substance obtained from a patient or volunteer that may or may not contain living or desquamated cells. |
 | | A human specimen that has patient identifiers or is coded and can be linked back to the original donor, even when the identifiers are not available to the investigative team. |
 | | When left-over non-anonymous surgical specimens are to be used, the surgical consent, which authorizes the use of the material for research, may be sufficient. |
