 GSM Speech Coder
When GSM was launched in the early 1990's, only the half rate coder was available.
This operated at a basic rate of 13 kbps which became 22 kbps gross when the coding for forward error correction was added.
This features voice activity detection, with insertion of comfort noise during periods of 'silence', and speech frame substitution, to minimize distortion due to interference.

 Speech Compression
All of the current low-rate speech coders are based on the principle of linear predictive coding (LPC) which is presented in the following sections.
The model says that the digital speech signal is the output of a digital filter (called the LPC filter) whose input is either a train of impulses or a white noise sequence.
Original (64000 bps) This is the original speech signal sampled at 8000 samples/second and u-law quantized at 8 bits/sample.

Encore Software develops GSM-AMR (3GPP-AMR) speech coder for 3G wireless applications, May 14, 2001, Bangalore   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
A Speech Coder, also known as "Codec" for compression/decompression, is a piece of DSP software that compresses digitized speech to reduce transmission channel or storage capacity requirements, and then decompresses received samples to reconstruct the original speech signal with some loss in signal quality.
Each speech coder is assigned a subjective measure that defines its closeness to "toll quality", a measure of acceptance for telephony applications.
A variable-rate encoding technique is used to change the rate at which to send speech data in accordance with the distance from the base station, or to prevent interference from electrical waves.

AMR Audio Codec by LEAD Technologies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The AMR speech coder consists of the multi-rate speech coder, a source controlled rate scheme including a voice activity detector and a comfort noise generation system, and an error concealment mechanism to combat the effects of transmission errors and lost packets.
The multi-rate speech coder is a single integrated speech codec with eight source rates from 4.75 kbps to 12.2 kbps, and a low rate background noise encoding mode.
AMR was adopted as the standard speech codec by 3GPP in October 1998.

 DVSI Evaluation Results
In selecting the best voice coder for their Mini-M satellite based application, Inmarsat, in conjunction with Comsat Laboratories, performed a MOS test on six 4.8 kbps voice coders (3.6 kbps speech + 1.2 kbps FEC).
The evaluation of four 7.2 kbps speech coders by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) for the purpose of selecting a speech coder for the APCO Project 25 North American land mobile radio communication system produced the above results.
The DVSI coder achieved a FOM score of 2.330, followed by the MELP coder with a 1.955, the AT&T coder with a 1.686 and the Lincoln Labs coder with a score of 1.365.

 G.722 Speech Coder DSP Code
The ITU G.722 audio coder is intended for wideband (50Hz - 7000Hz) audio signals.
The sample rate is 16kHz with 15-bit samples, and the compression is to 64kb/s.
Delay is low, the encoder output being a code adaptively quantised from the current input sample and the coder memory.

LPC-10 speech coder software   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
When I modified this software, my intent was not to alter the speech processing algorithms of the original code at all, and I believe I have achieved that goal.
So, I have some knowledge about the details of the code, but I wasn't attempting to learn all of the speech processing algorithms as I was doing it.
If you want to know more about LPC-10's algorithms in particular, there are several research articles mentioned in the file FAQ in the distribution (the first half of this file is about the CELP 4800 bps standard -- the second half has references about LPC-10).

 G.729 Speech Coder DSP Code
Using the Conjugate Structure Algebraic Codebook Linear Prediction Coding algorithm, 16-bit samples of speech made at 8kHz are compressed into an 8kb/s stream.
The code has been written to allow multi-channel operation by being fully re-entrant, and is also C-callable.
In terms of voice quality, the G.729AB vocoder achieves an MOS figure of 3.9, assuming clean input speech.
