Speech and Signal Processing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Signal processing is concerned with the design, analysis, and implementation of systems that extract information of interest from available data in a manner that is optimal in some sense.
Recent rapid advances in digital signal processors, computer systems, and integrated circuit technology have all facilitated the development of sophisticated signal processing techniques whose implementation would have been unthinkable only a short time ago.
Advanced signal processing techniques have proved very valuable in numerous applications in areas as diverse as telecommunications, radar and sonar, audio and acoustics, high- energy physics and astronomy, biomedical engineering, and many others.

Human brain signal-based speech recognition using fuzzy rule processing
Audio-visual, or bimodal, speech recognition is an example of combining human signals in order to improve the interaction between the human and computer.
In bimodal speech recognition, the visual speech cues obtained from a speaker’s lip movements are combined with the acoustic speech sounds.
The advantage of considering human EEG signals as an additional modality for speech recognition is that EEG signals are immune from noise sources that are common with audio speech signals.

 Automatic Speech Recognition at CSLU
This technology recognizes speech by estimating the likelihood of each phoneme at contiguous, small regions (frames) of the speech signal.
The topic of time-aligning a given sequence of words or phonemes with a known speech signal is important for several areas of speech research, and is also strongly linked with the topic of speech recognition.
Our approaches to this problem include detecting and utilizing instants of phoneme-related change in different energy bands of the speech signal (notably the work done by Jan van Santen), extracting and integrating acoustic-phonetic information (such as voicing and burst information) into the HMM/ANN framework, and classifying and integrating phonetic transition information into the HMM framework.

It is known that when signals interfere in filter-bank channels the resultant signal shows changes in both amplitude envelope and frequency dependant upon the dominance of one signal over another.
By investigating the effects of interfering signals in these situations it is hoped that useful features for speech signal processing will result.
These images showed that these points where found to seperate formants in the speech signal, and perhaps more importantly showed that the period of these points was equal to the pitch period of the speakers voice.
