 Hjemmekinoguiden DVDnett.no - Speechless (1994) - anmeldelse

 Movie Reviews by Edwin Jahiel
I try to avoid movies that I feel will be poor, but I had high hopes (the title of a good British film, by the way) for "Speechless."
Could it be the camera angles?) Q: I haven't seen "Speechless" but from what I read it is about two speechwriters who fall in love while working for senatorial candidates (one Republican, one Democrat) who are competing in New Mexico.
A: 1) The music of "Speechless" is by Marc Shaiman, who scored "Sleepless " (in Seattle, that is).

'Primer' surprise winner at Sundance - MORE MOVIE NEWS AND FEATURES - MSNBC.com
Carruth was nearly speechless at his own upset, thanking “the cast, who was also the crew.” He remembered when the project “wasn’t a Sundance film but was a bunch of guys moving furniture” at his parents’ home, which he used as a location.
The film also picked up the Alfred P. Sloan Prize, which carries a $20,000 cash award and celebrates indie films incorporating themes of science and technology, during a ceremony at Park City Racquet Club.
The film was picked up during the fest by Warner Independent Pictures, the banner’s first acquisition.

 NYPOST.COM Movie Reviews: DIVINE INTERVENTION
By JONATHAN FOREMAN
The film also follows a speechless, doleful lead character (Suleiman) as he visits his father in the hospital, meets his beautiful girlfriend (Manal Khader) at an Israeli checkpoint (she's forbidden to leave the West Bank) for silent assignations, and stares into space.
Much of the film - a series of loosely connected vignettes - concerns the mildly comic squabbling of various Nazareth neighbors, though you never know who is whom.
These deadpan realist sequences with their hints of bottled-up violence are interspersed with (and for the most part undermined by) crude surrealist fantasy ones - a flying Palestinian ninja woman kills a squad of dancing Israeli militiamen, a peach pit thrown out of a car window blows up an Israeli tank.

 Primal Fear (1996)
I was speechless. The movie has so many twists!
I had just gotten done seeing the movie Fight Club when a relative of mine said " If you like that movie, you'll like Primal Fear." I didn't believe him, because I had believed that Fight Club was the best movie on the face of the planet.
The fact that this was made during the starting of his acting career was unbelievable.

 The Elegant Variation
And although the competition isn't as direct, if one finds one's interest in Alfred Kinsey limited, a trip to the multiplex to catch Bill Condon's film Kinsey is likely to seem a considerably more appealing prospect than wading through the overheated prose stylings of T.C. Boyle.
Even as a dumb 15-year-old more interested in the Beatles and girls, I was stunned and speechless as I stood before the canvas, whose dimensions are about 11 feet x 25 feet.
We were once college newspaper editors ourselves (NYU, Washington Square News, 1984-86), so it seems a bit too easy to poke fun at others, but that's not going to stop us from directing your attention to this (presumably unintentionally) hilarious attempt by the Daily Princetonian to render Alan Hollinghurst for the masses.

The incongruous brutality of this dark ending left audiences speechless and set off a national debate on film, violence, and individual responsibility.
Bonnie's quest for adventure and Clyde's masculine overcompensation drive the film, leading the two into an initially fun-filled and adventurous life of petty larceny.
The film, they point out, punishes Bonnie and Clyde--and by extension the audience--for their insouciant acceptance of lawbreaking.

 Michael Keaton: One Great Actor-Biography
Michael's next film was not until Christmas 1995, where he starred along with Geena Davis in the film Speechless, where the two portrayed speech writers for competing political parties.
The film was a critical and box office success and made Michael's character so memorable that he then made a cameo in the George Clooney film, Out Of Sight, which was also based on an Elmore Leonard novel.
Michael dropped out of Kent State after his sophomore year in 1972 to pursue other venues; he took a job as a stagehand at a local PBS station and eventually started his career as a technical crew person on the set of Mister Rogers Neighborhood, and even played the part of Black-and-White Panda.

Amazon.com: DVD: The Passion of the Christ (Widescreen Edition) (2004)
This movie is the most realistic, historically accurate version of Christ's Passion on film to date and may never be surpassed.
The actual passion is what Jesus had to endure, and had the film been shown any other way that passion could never be conveyed.
If one accepts that Gibson's intentions are sincere, The Passion can be accepted for what it is: a grueling, straightforward (some might say unimaginative) and extremely violent depiction of the Passion, guaranteed to render devout Christians speechless while it intensifies their faith.

Amazon.co.uk: Finding Neverland (OST) [Soundtrack]: Music
Subtly underpinning much of the emotional weight of the film Finding Neverland, this score -- specially released for standalone consumption, rather than simply taking the music from the film as-is -- leaves me speechless, time after time.
Listening to this score one truly can find Neverland; the themes are emphasised in the film so that simply listening to the Imagination Waltz or the Family Theme in their many variations immediately transports the listener back to Hyde Park or the theatre...
Jan Kaczmarek creates simple themes which are then endlessly improvised upon on a number of different instruments, changing from light delicate tones tinged with minor variations and filled with sadness to heavy piano work full of heartfelt emotions.

After turning down the role Tom Hanks made famous in Splash, Keaton went on to star as a funny gangster in Johnny Dangerously, a car maker in Gung Ho, a hockey player in Touch and Go and a con artist in The Squeeze.

Alas, the subject of Before Night Falls is likely not a name you'll be familiar with anyway, but there he is, a speechless little boy playing in a pit dug in the ground.
In his second film, Schnabel attempts to improve on his truly lame Basquiat, another down-and-out artist tragedy, and at least Before Night Falls is better than that.
We are invited to let the film wash over us, but its disjointed amateurism prevents that from happening with much success.

Movie Database - [TV Guide Online]
The twist that makes Nakajima's film more interesting than it might have been is that whatever killed everyone else on the planet has left the five survivors speechless; like preverbal primitive humans, they must communicate without spoken language.
Nakajima shot on 16 mm black-and-white film — a refreshing alternative to video — and his use of actual locations rather than constructed sets reveals an interesting, if disturbing, irony: Our present world stands in quite convincingly for a postapocalyptic landscape.
Despite the title, Queens-based filmmaker Yasuaki Nakajima's nano-budget sci-fi feature is less a thriller than a social drama in the tradition of FIVE (1951) and THE WORLD, THE FLESH, AND THE DEVIL (1959), in which a small group of men and women must rebuild their lives after some catastrophe.
