Joel C. Rosenberg: MIKE GERSON: PROFILE OF PRESIDENT BUSH'S CHIEF SPEECHWRITER
I first had the privilege of meeting Mike Gerson when he was a speechwriter for Jack Kemp and I was a policy analyst for Kemp and Bill Bennett at Empower America back in the early 1990s.
There is little doubt that it's true -- that's why presidents hire speechwriters -- and in any event, Bush isn't the first Republican politician Gerson has worked for who may have wondered if audiences would notice the obvious "eloquence gap" between his own impromptu self and the formal speaker armed with a Gerson-written script.
For all the testimonials about Gerson's ability, presidential speechwriting is not, as author and former Bush speechwriter David Frum notes, "an exercise in writerly self-expression." It is a cooperative undertaking.

One sign that he was no ordinary speechwriter is the fact that instead of being housed, as speechwriters usually are, in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, Gerson  shared an office suite with Bartlett on the second floor of the West Wing.
