His moniker is plastered on the green-and-yellow lawnmowers that many of you are getting reacquainted with now that the grass is growing again, and his name also adorns all those tractors, plows, and planters that farmers are using to work their fields.
Their cast-iron plow blades had worked well in the sandy fields of Vermont, but the dark, rich Midwestern earth clung to the iron blades, requiring farmers to stop every few steps to scrape off the soil with a paddle.
He also proved to be a savvy businessman: Instead of making plows to order, as was customary at the time, he made them in advance and then rode around the countryside peddling them.

An easy description of David Mamet is to say he focuses mainly on male relationships and often writes dialogue in staccato bursts.
But Len Kluge, who is co-directing and appearing in Mamet's "Speed the Plow" at the Spotlight Theatre beginning Thursday, Aug. 16, would like to refine that a bit.
"Speed the Plow," first produced in 1988, is about Charlie (Kluge) and Bobby (Jeff Magnuson), two men who have known each other for 11 years and work for a film studio in Hollywood.

The plow is low and close to the truck, it would push the car out of the way.
If it were angled right, the plow blade is a foot or two off the ground and would rip a car to shreds, if the plow hit it.

Aisle Say (Boston): Speed the Plow
"Speed the Plow" may be minor Mamet, but in its present incarnation at the Lyric Stage it is elegant and amusing, a well-wrought demonstration of the adage that the medium is the message.
For devotees of the art of the drama there is something particularly satisfying about being invited to laugh in the theatre at the antics of the arrested adolescents who manufacture celluloid dreams for a public that once upon a time bought them hand-crafted on the stage.
"Speed the Plow" -- the title is a variant of "Godspeed", the blessing on a journey, or on the farmer's labor-- is another of Mamet's portraits of men at work, "Glengarry Glen Ross" at the upper end of the food chain.

KINGSVILLE (March 15, 2005) — The 2004-2005 Texas AandM University-Kingsville theatre season continues with David Mamet’s Speed the Plow, a satire of Hollywood and American culture.
Speed the Plow focuses on two Hollywood executives, Bobby and Charlie, with a winning script and a movie star ready to act in it.
On the day before their big pitch meeting with a studio head, Bobby spends the night with a secretary named Karen who convinces him that an unconventional book would be a better idea to sell.

 The Memphis Flyer: Feature
Playwright David Mamet takes a meeting in Hollywood in Speed the Plow.
The two-act play clocks in at about 80 minutes, but in its fleet intensity it hits all the playwright's thematic and stylistic high points.
Although a compelling tour-de-force, Speed the Plow is not near the top of Mamet's canon -- it bites off more than its voracious hucksters can chew.

Theater, Theater Guild of Ancon's "Speed the Plow"
"Speed the Plow" is not a drama in the socialist realism genre, about heroic collective farmers struggling to meet Uncle Joe's Five Year Plan.
On January 3, the Theatre Guild of Ancon put on a staged reading of the play, a presentation form somewhere between that of a first reading and a dress rehearsal, for one night only.
Originally scheduled for last August but postponed by a work schedule conflict, Speed the Plow concluded the guild's 2002 three-play Great American Playwrights' Staged Reading Series.

These days the mainstream left claims to support both market liberalism and social justice, while people in general are at best pragmatic, at worst cynical or disengaged; so not to many people would be shocked by the idea that Hollywood executives are only in it for the money.
The protagonists of Speed the Plow are Bobby Gould, the head of production of a Hollywood studio, and Charlie Fox, a weather-beaten, self-confessed 'whore', who after years of struggling, finds himself within reach of the wealth and power he craves, when a major Hollywood star agrees on a whim to star in his film.
The project is threatened however when Gould falls under the influence of his temporary secretary Karen, who to his bewilderment asks him naively if the film is any good.
