There was no doubt in Low's mind that he had chosen the perfect subject for an IMAX film: Indy car racing was the most competitive form of racing, the cars were technologically the most interesting, and the types of race courses-ovals, big ovals, road courses and city courses-were the most varied.

DVD Review: Super Speedway: The Mach II Edition
Not only is "Super Speedway" a technical achievement due to the fact that the footage was well-captured by the giant cameras strapped to cars going at hundreds of miles an hour, but it also does a fine job of telling the story of the Andrettis and their history of racing.
VIDEO: The original edition of "Super Speedway" provided a full_frame transfer, which I didn't particularly object to, since full_frame is generally show the large-format IMAX pictures are shown when they come to home video.
"Speedway", though, remains a real masterpiece of sound design; while the film transports us into the middle of the racing experience, the sound design really completes the experience and elevates the thrills to a far higher level.

SPEEDWAY JUNKY (2001) Director: Nickolas Perry Stars: Jesse Bradford, Jordan Brower, Darryl Hannah, Jonathan Taylor ...
But the problem of Speedway Junky is not its acting, but all its clichéd plot twists, which are completely unbelievable yet at the same time annoyingly predictable.
Suffice to say that threats from the Las Vegas mafia, the melodramatic choice between hustling or love, the overacted dying scene of one of the film’s main characters, and the cheap symbolism of the silver dollar, which obviously signifies the fortune of fate, figure prominently in the film’s final acts.
Speedway Junky aims for depth and invested emotions, but just fails to deliver much of anything more than unfulfilled promises and missed opportunities.

SPEEDWAY JUNKY ON-LINE REVIEW by Christian Leopold Shea
What is disappointing about Speedway Junky is that Perry, as a first time feature film director, seemed unsure of himself in a film of this size, and wasn't fully aware of just how far he could really push his talented cast.
One of the ironies of why Speedway Junky has been sitting on the shelf for so long is that film distributors wanted "bigger stars" in it way back in the last century.
There sat Speedway Junky, a marvelous little film which everyone wanted to buy, provided that they could have it at a low price, and provided it could be filmed (or even re-shot, if necessary) with actors and actresses who were now pulling down million-dollar paychecks.
