Speke (pronounced Speak) is a district of Liverpool, England.
From 1795 until 1921, the Speke estate had belonged to the Watt family; when the family died out, the estate was placed in trust.
The parish of Speke became part of the county borough of Liverpool in 1932, having previously been part of the Whiston Rural District.

The airport is located 7 miles south east of the centre of Liverpool, United Kingdom, adjacent to the Mersey Estuary.
Speke Airport - its original name (pronounced Speak) - started scheduled flights in 1930, however was 'officially' opened in the summer of 1933.
Speke was witness to what is thought to be the fastest air to air combat "kill" in the Battle of Britain and possibly of all time.

Speke was now overloaded with aircraft often over 200 being evident at any one time.
On V.E. Day it is reported that the American aircrew at Speke gave the Airport Staff a spectacular impromptu air display using any aircraft that were available and by all accounts a Mustang stole the show with some spectacular low flying.
The original airport is now being converted to a business park and the terminal has been renovated and converted into a hotel, No1 and No 2 hangers have also preserved and one of them has been converted into a sports centre.

A couple of photographs taken at Speke Airport in Liverpool by the author's grandfather sometime during the early 1960s.
In the early 1930s, the airport had operated from a converted farmhouse (illustrated here) which acted both as terminal building and- with the assistance of an improvised superstructure added to an attic window- as control tower.
In 2002, Speke Airport was renamed and 'rebranded' Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

The former McCartney home, at Forthlin Road must be reached by minibus from Speke Hall, another National Trust property which is quite a contrast with the terraced house in which young Paul lived.
Speke Hall was built in 1490 and is one of the finest, fl and white, half timbered buildings in Britain.
There is some juxtaposition between Speke Hall, built 1490, and the old Liverpool Airport, purpose built in the 1930's and the new Liverpool Airport built recently.

British airport bars are all the same, aren't they.
This enormous free-standing late 30s (?) building included a big plain somewhat faded and rather grubby public bar, a very pleasant "snug lounge" and a very large lounge, complete with dance floor, occupied by a private party when I was there.
From the outside this is a slightly down at heel pub on the edge of the Speke housing estate.

It plans to transfer the depot to East Midlands Airport in Leicestershire at the beginning of next year.

She was speaking this morning (July 2) at a ceremony to unveil the new-look logo for Liverpool John Lennon Airport, as the city's Speke Airport will be officially known from Spring 2002.
Ono was also presented with a scaled-down version of the statue of Lennon that will sit in the new £32.5 million terminal in the airport, due for completion in Spring.
The statue, which will weigh half a tonne and stand 7 feet 6 inches tall, shows Lennon wearing a suit and T-shirt, with his trademark round glasses and hair slicked back.
