Cortez Smith, senior counsel for Spelling Entertainment, was on the witness stand all day Monday as testimony continued in Los Angeles superior court in the pregnancy discrimination lawsuit filed by actress Hunter Tylo.
Spelling is the company that produces the popular Fox television show, and Smith is the attorney who drafted the letter firing Tylo.

The sale is likely to improve Spelling's bottom line, as Virgin Interactive has been losing money in the past couple of years as a result of a downturn in the interactive games business.
Virgin, which is 91% owned by Spelling and 9% by ViacomViacom, lost $14.3 million in 1995 and $16.7 million in the first half of last year on sales of about $200 million.
Spelling has not reported Virgin's earnings since the second quarter of last year and a Spelling spokeswoman declined comment on whether it was still losing money, although Wall Street analysts say its performance hasn't improved dramatically.

At Spelling, spokeswoman Nancy Bushkin insists that there's no hard feelings between her firm and Virgin Interactive, which has scored a few successes in the game industry with titles like Command and Conquer and Golden Nugget.
Although Bushkin declines to say how much Spelling's stake in Virgin is worth, or whether a prospective suitor is now waiting in the wings, she notes that the actual sell-off could take "several months." Bushkin adds that it's not known as yet what Viacom will do with its Virgin shares.

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Following a month-long trial, a jury decided Monday that Aaron Spelling and Spelling Entertainment discriminated against an actress fired from the popular television show "Melrose Place" after revealing she was pregnant.
     Actress Hunter Tylo was awarded $4 million for emotional distress and $894,601 for breach of contract by the Los Angeles jury after she sued Spelling for pregnancy discrimination, breach of contract and wrongful termination because she told show producers she was expecting and was then let go from her job.
     Tylo had been hired by Spelling in February 1996 to play the part of a "sexy vixen" on "Melrose Place." But Spelling's attorneys said weight gain that accompanies pregnancy would make it impossible for her to be convincing in the role.

Artisan Entertainment recently announced a box set release for the series' first season, but this great news was tempered by disappointment that the crucial pilot episode would not be included.
Despite Artisan Entertainment's announcement for their series box sets, and the fact that New Line Home Video plans to follow soon with the Twin Peaks movie, Warner Bros. continues to drop the ball in regard to putting out the pilot episode on DVD.
Were they to release their own remastered Region 1 edition, preferably with the broadcast content as default and the alternate ending as a supplement, I would certainly buy the episode again.
