Spelljammer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Spelljammer setting is designed to allow the usual sword and sorcery adventures of Dungeons and Dragons to take place within the framework of outer space tropes.
The Spelljammer is a legendary ship which looks like a gigantic manta ray, and houses an entire city on its back.
The Spelljammer is an huge living ship that appears to be a manta ray with a tail curved upwards in a striking position.

 Encyclopedia: Spelljammer
Spelljammer (1989) is a campaign setting for the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (2nd edition) role playing game, which features a fantastical (as opposed to scientific) outer space environment.
It introduces the concept of crystal spheres (roughly the size of a solar system), which may contain mutliple worlds and are navigable using spelljamming ships (as the name implies, operated by the power of magic).
The Spelljammer setting is designed to allow some fantastic space adventures to take place within the traditional sword and sorcery mileu of Dungeons and Dragons ; it also provides as a vehicle for crossovers between other D&D settings, in much the same fashion as the Planescape setting.

Revising the Spelljammer Rules   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Spelljammer did not recommend starting from scratch to avoid the problems of the sudden changes in the campaign, nor did it provide a true self-contained setting as it should have, nor did it even have a reasonable approach toward dealing with those problems of the sudden change.
The target in the case of spelljammers is generally a moving ship and not a stationary castle wall but the overriding concept is still the same, a ship being far larger than a man. The Spelljammer catapult, for example, must logically be designed somewhat differently from what you might see on the ground.
Spelljammer is rife with such opportunities for new spells, mostly because it lacks a setting of its own wherein a proper set of traditional spells could be set forth.

 Spelljammer Primer
Travel within planatary atmospheres is a very tricky buisiness, spelljammers are are not really designed to stand up to the stress caused by wind and weather and in many ways landing on a planet is the most dangerous maneuver a spelljammer might routinely attempt.
Even when the wind is calm spelljammers are limited to a move of 24 in the atmosphere, the rough equivalent of SR 1.
Spelljammers are inherently less maneuverable within the atmosphere, all MCs are reduced by one level.

In my humble opinion Spelljammer was one the most original and creative things ever to come out the doors of TSR, though Space and Fantasy together in a non ni tech setting was never going to be anything else but hit or miss controversial.
I'd often thought of running an altered spelljammer in which the theory that everything in space was floating in ether was true (modified phlogoston hehe), and Devinci (spelling) got to fly wacky contraptions into space with air bubbles, et cetera.
Spelljammer had a LONG list of products in support of it and even TSR was not blind enough to the realities of sales to keep pimping a setting with rock bottom sales.

Home of the Underdogs - Entry: Spelljammer: Pirates of Realmspace   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Arguably the worst RPG ever from SSI, Spelljammer is a tedious, flat, and even ugly-looking RPG that somehow manages to exclude all the elements that made TSR's Spelljammer paper RPG world a memorable one.
As in the TSR original, Spelljammer is set in a futuristic world that seems like a mix between sci-fi, fantasy, and steampunk.
You are given command of your very own spelljammer ship, with a promise to run errands for various characters until you stumble upon the larger (and quite cliche) plot.

 Why Spelljammer
Spelljammer: Shadow of the Spider Moon is a D20 mini-game I wrote for issue #151 of Polyhedron Magazine, a.k.a.
Spider Moon "revisits" many of the familiar concepts from the original Spelljammer campaign setting written by the marvelously creative (and all-around nice guy) Jeff Grubb and published by TSR in 1989, but with some new twists.
On the one hand, you had many aspects of classic heroic fantasy: dire villains, including the mind flayers, drow, and the neogi; a new addition to the DandD game; mysteries, such as the enigmatic arcane; and a grand selection of exotic locations in which to run your campaign.

RPGnet: The Inside Scoop on Gaming
Spelljammer: Shadow of the Spider Moon provides an easy ship combat system and decent prestige classes, helping bring a classic into 3rd Edition, but the setting material needs a little fleshing out.
Note that a character doesn't have to have the Spelljammer Ace prestige class to be a pilot, but to be the best of the best pilots, this is the way to go.
Note, "Spelljammer Pilot" isn't on the feat list, it has been changed to "Spelljammer Helm Operation")* I'd think that being a spelljammer pilot would be something special and at least require the "Spelljammer Helm Operation" feat, but the text is unclear on this.

As for getting rid of the stuff that made Spelljammer "fun" (giant space hamsters, tinker gnomes, tons of continuity known only to a miniscule number of players), well, all I can say is that we did that very intentionally, and most people seem ready to thank us for it.
Spelljammer was originally meant to depict space from a mideaval-type viewpoint.
Just to be clear, spelljammer helms do not "suck" spells out of the minds of their drivers.

SJML: Re: Thickness & Ship combat
You'd have to keep track of where those 30 or 40 crewmembers are from round to round, etc. Sort of like hit locations in melee combat -- works in many games, but DandD has always ignored it for a simpler system.
I realize that it's a bit of a rather drastic departure from the RPG-based elements we've been throwing around so far, but, well, I think it might be worth looking at.
Besides, if that were the case, I think there'd be a much better chance of some wargame company possibly picking up Spelljammer in that sense (ala White Wolf picking up Ravenloft).
