Topic: Spenborough

  Cleckheaton at AllExperts
It is at the centre of the Spen Valley and was the major town in the pre-1974 borough of Spenborough.
The inhabitants of Spenborough were very public spirited and due to its local nature everyone knew their councillor and took part in public events which were very widespread and popular.
The local gentry were well respected and were great benefactors to local causes, the Mowatt family paid for Cleckheaton Library and also the reference library at Cleckheaton's grammar (later secondary) school, Whitcliffe Mount which bears their name.

 Courtesy Titles
As the wife of a peer, she is not known as "Lady Fanny Spenborough"; instead, she is "Lady Spenborough"-- and this would be true no matter what her parentage, because all wives of peers take their titles and ranks from their husbands.
Fanny is not even the Dowager Lady Spenborough since she is not the mother or stepmother of the new earl.
So now there are two Lady Spenboroughs-- but one can assume that when one mentions "Lady Spenborough" that she is the wife of the present incumbent; if one meant Fanny, one would have to distinguish her as "Fanny, Lady Spenborough."

 Entails
Most marriage settlements provide that the money she brings to the marriage (her dowry) will revert to her in widowhood or, if she does not survive her husband, be inherited by her (often female) children.
Traditionally, she would have been entitled to 1/3 of the income ("dower") from her late husband's estate, but the contract may have provided otherwise; indeed, the purpose of marriage settlements was to avoid the common law rules of dower and parcener.
It would be entirely up to the parties whether she would retain her right to income from the Spenborough estate after remarriage, but in my opinion, it is likely that she would lose her right to any income from the Spenborough estate when she remarries.

In False Colours, when Lady Denville decided to marry Sir Bonamy, one beneficial circumstance she noted about the match was that after she was married, she would no longer be a dowager countess.
Fanny, Lady Spenborough, is not a dowager and never will be, because the new Lord Spenborough was not a descendant of her deceased husband.

Since Lord Dorrington and Mr Eaglesham showed no disposition to bring their acrimonious dialogue to an end, and Lord Spenborough's polite attempts to recall them to a sense of their surroundings were not attended to, Rotherham intervened, saying impatiently: "Do you mean to continue arguing all day, or are we to hear the Will read?"
Both gentleman glared at him; and Mr Perrott, taking advantage of the sudden silence, spread open a crackling document and in severe accents announced it to be the last Will and Testament of George Henry Vernon Carlow, Fifth Earl of Spenborough.
As Serena had foretold, it contained little of interest to its auditors.
