Spencer Dryden, the drummer for the Jefferson Airplane who once appeared with his group on the cover of Life magazine but had fallen on hard times, died Monday from cancer.
Dryden was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 for his work with the Jefferson Airplane during the band's glory years -- from the breakthrough 1967 "Surrealistic Pillow" album through historic rock festivals such as Woodstock and Altamont.
Dryden conducted an affair with the band's female vocalist, Grace Slick, and his marriage to the former Sally Mann was covered extensively in Rolling Stone magazine.

Spencer Dryden (April 7, 1938 – January 11, 2005) was an American musician who was best known as the drummer for Jefferson Airplane, New Riders of the Purple Sage and The Dinosaurs.
Dryden was born in New York City to Alice and Wheeler Dryden, a half-brother of Charlie Chaplin.
From 1966 to 1970, Dryden served as the drummer for Jefferson Airplane.

Spencer Dryden was the drummer in the classic line-up of Jefferson Airplane, from the spring of 1966 until the winter of 1969-70, and for most of that time was one of the three most well-known drummers on the San Francisco scene (along with the Grateful Dead's Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart).
Dryden was along for the ride and rose to the occasion -- from playing clubs in 1966, he went to performing in front of 50,000 people in June of 1967, at the Monterey Pop Festival.
Dryden played an essential role within the group's sound, providing more of a compelling, driving beat for many of the songs on Surrealistic Pillow than the band's first LP had shown, as well as great sensitivity as a percussionist on some of the more subtle songs such as the ballad "Today".

One Chaplin biographer described a scene of idyllic domesticity at a family Christmas party in 1943 when 5-year-old Spencer Dryden read "The Night Before Christmas." After attending Glendale High School, he graduated from the Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad (San Diego County) in 1955.
He played in some early rock 'n' roll bands but soon drifted toward jazz and was working as a drummer at the Hollywood strip club the Pink Pussycat when session drummer Earl Palmer recommended him to the Airplane's manager.
