Mary Rebecca Scanlon "Beckie" McCallie, widow of the late Spencer Jarnagin McCallie, Jr., died on Friday, June 9, 2006, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Spencer and Sara McCallie in Harrison.
On a depression-era "walking date" Spencer remarked that his father, Spencer Sr., was one of 16 children by the same mother.
Erroneously thinking that her children might never travel, she and Spencer became part of the founding families of a chapter of the Experiment in International Living in Chattanooga and hosted college age visitors in their home for as long as a year at a time.

Spencer Jarnagin McCallie Jr., son of one of the school’s founders and Headmaster for 25 years, died in July at 92.
Spencer Jarnagin McCallie Jr., known as "Dr. Spence" to thousands of McCallie School faculty, alumni, parents and students died July 13, 2001.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, he leaves four children, Spencer McCallie III of Chattanooga, who succeeded his father as Headmaster of McCallie, Franklin McCallie, of Kirkwood, Missouri, Ambassador Marshall McCallie of Carlisle, Pennsylvania., and Helen McCallie, of Gray Summit, Missouri, and seven grandchildren.

President Jacobs vigorous defense of the policies adopted was eloquently supported by T. Nelson and William Rowles in the legislature, and the rumors of fraud appeared to be largely unfounded; but the expected aid from the state failed to materialize.
By the summer of 1842 the company was so hopelessly involved in debt and had suffered such a loss of prestige that a deed of trust was executed in favor of T. Nixon Van Dyke and Spencer Jarnagin, in an attempt to save the project from complete bankruptcy.
Even this measure proved disastrous, for it led directly to the filing of a suit against the company by the Attorney General of the state on October 3, 1842, asking the forfeiture of the charter.

John was born about 1748 in VA. He moved to the area of TN in the late 1700s, and then to OH about 1805 (where he died in 1816).
Over 1,300 descendants of John Jarnagin and Mary Smith are included in this history of the family, representing descendants of four of their (at least) nine children: Nancy (240), Mary (11), Isaac (750), and Eli (328).
The Jarnagin brothers were from VA, migrated to the Jefferson/Grainger Co. TN area.
