  Spermiogenesis
elegans, spermiogenesis is the final maturation of sperm, when the cell builds its pseudopod, acquires the ability to crawl, and becomes capable of fertilizing an oocyte.
Spermiogenesis of male spermatids is triggered upon mating.
Spermiogenesis is a very rapid process; it only takes about 5 minutes to complete.

The purpose of this section is to examine the subcategories of spermatogenesis: spermatocytogenesis, meiosis and spermiogenesis.
Spermiogenesis is the period of morphological transformation as the round spermatids is reorganized into a spermatozoa.
To demonstrate that spermiogenesis actually occurs find the following cell types: The ealiest cell you can identify is the newly formed round spermatids which does not yet have acrosomal granules.

Spermiogenesis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spermiogenesis is the creation of a spermatozoon from a spermatid.
Spermiogenesis is the last stage of a process called spermatogenesis.
During spermiogenesis, the spermatids begin to grow a tail, and develop a thickened mid-piece, where the mitochondria gather and form an axoneme.

Formation of the Cytoskeleton and Motile Apparatus in Spermatids of Marsilea
Prime examples of stored proteins are the tubulins, which represent the bulk of the fiberous portion of the cytoskeleton and the ciliary axonemes; in both structures, the tubulin subunits are assembled into microtubules.
New ß-tubulin is synthesized in these cells only late in spermiogenesis, when the spermatids are engaged in ciliary axoneme formation.

By the end of spermiogenesis, the nuclear envelope is totally differentiated with the exception of the portion called "redundant nuclear envelope" containing pores, and surrounding the "basal knobs" (most often two of them, located at the posterior part of the nucleus).
By the end of spermiogenesis, the apical part of the perinuclear substance is differentiated as a perforatorium, containing dehydrated protein crystalloids.
In late spermiogenesis, the annulus slips towards a more distal position, allowing the mitochondria to affix to the flagellum, forming a typical helix.

During the first step of spermiogenesis, protamines are found spread over very slightly condensed chromatin with their cysteines in a reactive state (protamine-cys-SH).
Subsequently, they participate in the mechanism of fiber coalescence and finally, in the last step of spermiogenesis, the remaining free reactive -SH groups of cysteine form disulfide bonds, thus promoting a definitive stabilization of the nucleoprotein complex in the ripe sperm nucleus.
