Topic: Sperrylite

  Rocks & Minerals: Sperrylite
Sperrylite is a tin-white mineral known for its brilliant metallic luster.
Sperrylite is cubic (2/m3) and is typically seen in well-developed cubes or cuboctahedra, some of which are so highly modified that crystal edges and corners appear rounded.
Elsewhere in Canada sperrylite has been reported from the Donaldson West deposit and with pentlandite, cubanite, and sphalerite at the Rottenstone mine on the southeast shore of Rottenstone Lake, Quebec; on the D and R claims along the Tulameen River; and in fl sands of the Fraser River near Lytton, British Columbia.

 SPERRYLITE (Platinum Arsenide)
Sperrylite is found in abundance only at Sudbury, Ontario where it is mined for its extremely valuable metal.
Sperrylite is a cousin of the much more common and well known mineral, pyrite.
The difference between the two structures is that the single sulfur of galena is replaced by a pair of sulfurs in sperrylite.

Mineralogical Record: Nickel and platinum-group element deposits at Noril'sk, Siberia
The majority of the platinum (9095%) in disseminated ore is found as sperrylite, with 1.2 ppm in pyrrhotite and pentlandite.
Platinum massive ores occur as sperrylite in pyrrhotite ores and as tetraferroplatinum, rustenburgite, maslovite and moncheite.
Very fine sperrylite and native platinum crystals are available for the collector; however, the rare platinum, palladium, iridium, rhodium, osmium and ruthenium minerals are found mainly as microscopic grains.

Sperrylite held rights to a number of platinum group metal (“PGM”) exploration interests in South Africa and was acquired by Ridge in 2001.
The termination of the Sperrylite Acquisition Agreement will be in full and final settlement of any and all claims known or arising in the future out of the subject matter of the Sperrylite acquisition which Ridge and/or Rosario may have against the other (including current or former officers and employees of either party).

Sperrylite is more abundant at Katiniq, and merenskyite is more abundant in Zone 2.
This fact is demonstrated by the occurrence of sudburyite and, more rarely, sperrylite within carbonate in secondary veins and in shear zones.
The morphology of the PGM has been extensively modified during this low-temperature alteration, with sperrylite crystals losing their euhedral form where parts of the crystal are in contact with altered silicates.

 Volume 7, Number 2
Under natural conditions, sperrylite and aurostibite are encountered as individual minerals on contacts with melts of noble metals in ultrabasic rocks, being the result of the high-temperature evolution of the magmatic process.
Therefore, the synthesis of these compounds from elements requires high temperatures and, in addition, the melting process should be performed in closed furnaces with an inert atmosphere preventing evaporation and oxidation of the components, especially in the case of arsenic.
In solving the problems related to the role of the sublayer crystal structure where epitaxial films of a new compound may grow, great possibilities are provided by the software 'CrystPic', which in terms of the system 'Mincryst' [6] allows measure the lengths of intertatomic bonds in the lattice, distinguish plane fragments.

Chairman Algy Cluff claims the Blue Ridge results provide further justification of the company's decision to undertake a full feasibility study into a mine producing around 200,000 oz of platinum group metals, it expects to complete in six months.
Since Blue Ridge has achieved the targets set when Cluff bought it for shares from the local Sperrylite group in 2000, 1.25 million new Cluff shares will be issued under the original Sperrylite deal to 'fl empowerment' group Rosario International, which agreed to buy the rights to them from the Sperrylite vendors for £9 million.
