Spetters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spetters, a Dutch film released in 1980 directed by Paul Verhoeven.
Spetters led to many protests across the board about the caricatural manner in which Verhoeven portrayed gays, christians, the police, the press and more.
Although Verhoeven made one more film in the Netherlands, it was the response to Spetters that led to his leaving the Netherlands for the more liberal film culture of the Hollywood of that day.

 Spetters
Spetters is essentially a working class coming of age film, concentrating on four characters who are trying to find the path that will suit them in life.
The three men, the spetters ("hotshots" or "grease stains"), are in the dirt biking scene.
In reality, Spetters runs a storyline quite parallel to Showgirls - a sexually explicit working class soap opera about fundamentally decent people who chase their dreams amorally, then either find failure or determine that they were chasing the wrong dreams.

"Spetters" was one of the first foreign films I ever saw and I saw it uncut.
I did grow up in a small town and I was in a group of "Spetters" (which is loosely translated as "HotShots").
At that time, one of the girls known in my group had become a famous model we all wanted to be like her and have what she got.

The three men, the spetters (it more or less means hotshots or grease spatterings depending upon whom you believe), are heavily involved in amateur Motorcross.
Spetters is not the technical masterpiece that Verhoeven is known for, but there's certainly nothing wrong with it.
In the end, Spetters is a film that you will remember because of its overall harsh and unflinching nature in addition to the fact it will shock you.

Paul Verhoeven's much-underrated film Spetters tells the typically brash and uncompromising story of three young men growing up in a sleepy village just outside of Rotterdam, consumed by small-town ennui, and desperate for a life more glamorous and exciting than their own loafing existence of discothèques, motor-cross and general everyday tedium.
The oft-discussed rape scene that happens half-way through the film is a real test for the audience, not simply for what is depicted within the scene (male gang rape replete with a brief erection) but also within the overall context (the protagonist eventually realises, through the rape, that he is indeed gay!).
Spetters, for me, is an extreme film and something of a minor-masterpiece...

Symbolic Power and Religious Impotence in Paul Verhoeven’s Spetters by Richard S. Ascough
An examination of the symbolic referents in the film, in particular the use of stereotypical male power symbols, shows how expectations of power dynamics are reversed in the lives of the main characters.
Although religion is portrayed in the film, it seems like simply part of the backdrop to the coming of age stories of the protagonists.
In the film, each of the main characters want to improve his or her situation in life, although each has his or her own definition of what that might entail.

It´s their loss; I think this is a fantastic film that offers some profound insights into the human condition.
Director Paul Verhoven may be best known to the mallrats as the helmer for over-the-top sci fi like "Robocop","Total Recall" and "Starship Troopers" and most lamentably for his so-bad-it´s-good sex soaper "Showgirls", but he had arguably already left his best work in the sack of his native Holland a decade or two earlier.
Paul Verhoeven´s story of three dirt bike buddies with motocross dreams in a small Netherlands town is just the kind of working-class soap opera one would expect from the director of Basic Instinct and Showgirls.

 dOc DVD Review: Spetters (1980)
He had already gained global notoriety with the graphic sexuality in his 1980 Spetters, with its concomitant sexual frankness in its tale of the life of young people in Rotterdam.
Unlike those later Hollywod pictures, however, Spetters (a slang term for sexually attractive people, according to my Dutch friend) crackles with a realistic slice of life view of the troubled lives of these people, without the salacious attitudes seen in Verhoeven's later work.
The story centers on the dreams of three young working-class men who are involved in motocross racing, the hot prospect Rien Hartman (Hans van Tongeren), his mechanic Eef Dewitt (Toon Agterberg) and the hapless and clueless Hans Black (Maarten Spanjer).

Dismissed in some quarters as an oversexed, gore-obsessed degenerate, a quick look at Verhoeven's early pictures reveals that there is certainly some method to his madness.
And while his Dutch films can be as bloody and libidinous as his better-known American movies, Spetters - for some, the highlight of his European career - proves that a rich sense of humour and a keen understanding of character lurk behind the exaggerated showman's love of excess.
Spetters (the title roughly translates as "Hotshots") is far less glossy than Verhoeven's recent offerings.
