River Spey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The River Spey is a river in the north-east of Scotland, the second longest and the fastest flowing river in Scotland.
The River Spey is unusual in that it increases speed as it flows closer to the coast, due to the surrounding geography.
The Spey railway bridge (now pedestrianised) Spey Bay to Garmouth was originally designed with the main span over the main flow of the river, however before construction was completed the river had changed its course and was running at one end of the bridge.

 Spey Casting 101
Named for the Spey River in Scotland – where the river is wide and the rocks and trees make a conventional back-cast virtually impossible – it is a great technique to have in your repertoire whenever you encounter similarly challenging geography.
The “C” Spey is accomplished anytime the tip of the rod or top hand traces that curved elliptical shape in the air in place of the cut or Snap which moves in a straight line.
Spey casting will open up a whole new world of fishing to those brave enough to try it because the fly stays in the water longer — and that’s where the fish are.

 Spey
Spey Casting is the perfect method of presenting a fly on rugged rivers with trees and bank side vegetation.
Spey Casting is essentially a roll cast; as a result the line does not need to be extended far behind the caster.
The element of the Spey Cast that propels the fly line across the river is the roll cast however the roll cast has the inherent problem that you cannot change casting direction through more than 5 degrees from the vertical plane in which you are casting.

 SPEY CASTING TOPICS
Let me reemphasize; in traditional Spey casting, the line is picked up from its initial starting point, the rod is loaded, and all that is needed to complete the cast is just enough stick or contact of the line to the water, at the proper moment, to allow the line to change directions.
Attempting a traditional Spey cast with one of these lines and a weighted fly can be an exercise in frustration; one out of five casts achieves the momentary stick or kiss of the line on the water, while the other four casts dive into the river like a merganser evading an eagle.
Traditional Spey casting definitely requires a fair amount of body movement and physical effort in the casting and handling of the larger rods that are employed.

River Run Anglers-News-About the Spey Shop   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The VSS was born from a 20 year passion for two-handed rods which led to an obsession with the idea of creating a shop that offered proper instruction, matched tackle, and solid advice.
The word "Spey" as it applies to a style of fishing and the tackle that attends this style, derives from the River Spey in Scotland.
The modern Spey rod, having been continually evolving, is much changed from the original solid wood rods of the early Scottish angler, but the idea that the fly must never travel behind the angler still remains.

A classic spey rod requires very little effort to cast and thus is physically easier on your body than some other rods.
My classic spey rods require a butt action to slow the tempo of the rod together with a strong and steady power all the way through the tip to project easy power and control over both long and short lines.

The main difference between spey casting and regular overhead casting is that there isn't a backcast where the fly goes behind the caster.
Any spey caster knows that the single spey represents a very challenging cast, but Simon made it look easy, and even moved his anchor 180 degrees (90 is considered extremely difficule).

What is spey casting?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Although single and double spey casts were developed for fishing forested or canyon waters with limited backcasting, they’ve only recently made the transition to the US and Canada.
The advantage to fly fishers in learning the spey casts is that in situations where a backcast is difficult, water becomes accessible to the fly that was previously the province of hardware, bait or float fishermen.
This and the RIO DVDs titled International Spey Casting and Modern Spey Casting are superb teaching aids for the spey caster.
