 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Dilleniidae -- Spring 1999
I restrict the Malvales to six families (Tiliaceae, Dirachmaceae, Byttneriaceae, Sterculiaceae, Bombacaceae and Malvaceae) and divided the Cistales into the Bixales (with Sphaerosepalaceae, Diegodendraceae, Bixaceae and Cochlospermaceae) and the Cistales proper (Muntingiaceae, Cistaceae, Monotaceae, Dipterocarpaceae and Sarcolaenaceae).
As note under Theales, Cronquist refers Monotaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Sarcolaenaceae, and Sphaerosepalaceae to his Theales where they are out of place given their clear and obvious relationship to the Malvanae.
They conclude that the malvalian complex is composed of four groups (1) the four core families, Bombacaceae, Malvaceae, Sterculiaceae, Tiliaceae; (2) the bixoid families, Bixaceae, Cochlospermaceae, and Sphaerosepalaceae; (3) the thymelaealan family, Thymelaeaceae; and (4) the cistalan families Cistaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Sarcolaenaceae and the newly proposed Muntingiaceae.

Madagascar's eight endemic plant families (Asteropeiaceae, Didymelaceae, Didiereaceae, Kaliphoraceae, Melanophyllaceae, Physenaceae, Sarcolaenaceae, and Sphaerosepalaceae) comprise 19 genera and ca.
Updated revisions now provide refined species circumscriptions and documented distributions as a basis for classifying species according to modified IUCN "risk of extinction" categories.
Analyses of 29 species in three families (Asteropeiaceae, Melanophyllaceae and Sphaerosepalaceae) show that at least 18 are currently classified as "threatened"; GAP analysis indicates that 7 of these have never been recorded in a protected area.

 Malvaceae Info: Allied Families
These can be placed in 3 groups (each of which has been given the rank of order in some classifications), plus the three individual families Muntingiaceae, Neuradaceae, and Sphaerosepalaceae.
Neuradaceae consists of 3 genera, Neurada, Neuradopsis and Grielum, with 8 or 9 species, found principally in South Africa, but with the single species of Neurada to be found in North Africa, south west Asia and India
Sphaerosepalaceae is composed of 2 genera, Rhopalocarpus and Dialyceras, both confined to Madagascar, consisting of 14 and 3 species respectively.

 Classification of Malvaceae: Overview
The Malvales is the sister group to the Sapindales (mostly tropical, but also including maples and horse chestnuts), and thence to the Brassicales (crucifers and allies).
In the Uppsala System the Elaeocarpaceae are transferred to the Oxalidales, in the Eurosid I subgroup of the Rosids, and the Lecythidaceae to the Ericales, in the Asterids.
In the Dahlgren System the Malvales consists of the families Bixaceae, Bombacaceae, Cistaceae, Cochlospermaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Huaceae, Malvaceae, Plagiopteraceae, Sterculiaceae, Sphaerosepalaceae, Sarcolaenaceae and Tiliaceae.

Orders see text Dicotyledons or dicots are flowering plants whose seed contains two embryonic leaves or cotyledons.
Families Malvaceae (mallows,...) Dipterocarpaceae Sarcolaenaceae Cistaceae Muntingiaceae Bixaceae Diegodendraceae Cochlospermaceae Sphaerosepalaceae Thymelaeaceae Neuradaceae The Malvales are an order of flowering plants, mostly comprised of shrubs and trees.
Tilia is a genus of about 30 species of trees, native throughout most of the temperate Northern Hemisphere, in Asia (where the greatest species diversity is found), Europe and eastern North America; it is absent from western North America.

The core Malvales clade has been consistently well-supported in molecular phylogenetic analyses as have the clades comprising Bixaceae+Diegodendraceae+Cochlospermaceae and Dipterocarpaceae+Sarcolaenaceae+Cistaceae.
However, placement of the remaining families (Muntingiaceae, Sphaerosepalaceae, Thymelaceae and Neuradaceae) is still unclear.
(1998) place Sphaerosepalaceae basal in the Bixaceae+Cochlospermaceae clade (Diegodendraceae was not sampled in their analysis).

White (1983) identified eight endemic plant families out of a total of 191.
These were Asteropeiaceae, Didiereaceae, Didymelaceae, Diegodendraceae, Geosiridaceae, Humbertiaceae, Sphaerosepalaceae and Sarcolaenaceae.
Some of these family groups have since been revised as a result of phylogenetic studies (e.g.
