Sphere, Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response - Home   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
Those promotional materials were produced in the occasion of the Sphere 10th anniversary reflecting the main message of Sphere as a practical articulation of the rights-based approach.
The underlying principle of Sphere is that all people have a right to life with dignity and to quality assistance regardless of political, ethnic or geographical specificity in the ‘life saving’ areas of Water, Sanitation/Hygiene Promotion, Shelter, Food security/Nutrition/food aid, and Health Services.
As the community of Sphere users is growing all over the world, with increased accumulated knowledge about its implementation in practice, the Sphere office is realising the need to further support the dissemination of this experience and knowledge about Sphere.

Sphere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A great circle is a circle on the sphere that has the same center as the sphere.
If a particular point on a sphere is designated as its north pole, then the corresponding antipodal point is called the south pole and the equator is the great circle that is equidistant to them.
On the sphere the geodesics are the great circles, so the other geometric concepts are defined like in plane geometry but with lines replaced by great circles.

Bernal sphere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Bernal sphere is a type of space habitat intended as a long-term home for permanent residents, first proposed in 1929 by Dr. John Desmond Bernal.
Sunlight was to be provided to the interior of the sphere using external mirrors to direct it in through large windows near the poles.
The form of a sphere was chosen for its optimum ability to contain air pressure and its optimum mass-efficiency at providing radiation shielding.

A sphere is defined as the locus of the points in three dimensions that are equidistant from a particular point (the center).
refers to the sphere's “intrinsic” dimension as a manifold, not the dimension to whatever space in which it happens to be immersed.

In astronomy and navigation, the celestial sphere is an imaginary rotating sphere of "gigantic radius", concentric with the Earth.
Many ancient societies believed that the stars were equidistant from the Earth and that this sphere was a real model of the universe.
As the earth rotates from west to east, the celestial sphere appears to rotate from east to west.

TechCrunch » First Screen Shot of Sphere
Sphere is a new blog search engine that quite frankly blows everything, and I mean everything, I’ve seen out of the water in terms of relevance (and, by the way, design…Adaptive Path was involved).
Sphere has tens of thousands of beta requests and is opening up to 100 lucky people this weekend.
Sphere team members think they will solve the Blog relevance problem by concentrating on relationships between Blogs, pushing spam-blogs way down the page, matching Blog content with relevant web articles from mainstream media, analysis of metadata, content semantic analysis -All These seem to me like more of the same old macro-content techniques.

In developing Sphere I did not look to history or endorse the continuation of a single course of evolution from the time before I was born but rather I looked closely at how computers are built and used today.
The User interface sphere may also provide facilities to run commands like any other shell, though any number of techniques can be employed by this sphere on any number of devices at any time, which may or may not include classic utilities, or may accomplish the same ends through data "workbenches".

 Dyson Spheres
A sphere's radius would be equal to the orbital distance of the race's home planet (or an equivelent distance based on the sun's output) so that once the sphere is completed, it will receive an appropriate distribution of energy so that the species can live comfortably on the interior surface.
The great advantage to a Dyson Sphere is twofold: One, the species inhabiting the sphere can theoretically use 100% of their sun's power, and two, the sphere's inner surface provides an enormous habitable area for, potentially, an entire species.
The Dyson Sphere which I have discussed so far is known as a Type 2 Dyson Sphere: It is a totally whole, solid sphere.

What they don't know is that the sphere has the power to manipulate their thoughts and perceptions, and before long the scientists' undersea habitat is a veritable haunted house of frightening visions and creeping paranoia.
Sphere makes some attempt to answer these questions, but the film is a mess, and it leads to one of the most anticlimactic endings of any science fiction film ever made.

The Dyson sphere (or Dyson shell) was originally proposed in 1959 by the astronomer Freeman Dyson in "Search for Artificial Stellar Sources of Infrared Radiation" in Science as a way for an advanced civilisation to utilise all of the energy radiated by their sun.
In a type I dyson sphere roughly the same things would be seen: a plane wall of orbital habitats, solar collectors and whatnot stretching away into what looks like infinity (although here the curvature may become noticeable for observant viewers) and a hemispherical bowl covering the rest of the sky, centered around the sun.
But if the sphere is inside the dyson sphere (the sun is ignored in this calculation, as we are only interested in the gravity of the dyson sphere), there is no mass inside it and hence the integral must be zero, which means that there is no gravitational field inside the sphere.

The Geometry of the Sphere 1.
It is easy to see that the circle of intersection will be largest when the plane passes through the center of the sphere, as it does in the figure to the left.
However, since the great circles are geodesics on the sphere, just as lines are in the plane, we should consider the great circles as replacements for lines.
Remember that a great circle is the intersection of the sphere with a plane that passes through the center of the sphere.
