Beyond those sobering statistics, there are at least five or six schemes for harnessing fusion energy that I know of.
One of them, called the spheromak, is studied here at Caltech in an experimental program run by Professor of Applied Physics Paul Bellan and his research group.
In the spheromak, electric currents flowing in a hot ionized gas—otherwise known as a plasma-—interact with magnetic fields embedded in the plasma.
