Topic: Sphyrnidae

  Hammerhead Taxonomy
However, it was mentioned to me that this may have been changed recently and the family Sphyrnidae was reverted to a single genus Sphyrna with a subgenus Eusphyra within the family Carcharhinidae.
Other than this unusual headgear, the hammerheads are very similar in overall form to the whaler sharks of the family Carcharhinidae (as established by Jordan and Evermann in 1896).
Compagno (1979, 1988) noted that the hammerheads are morphologically most similar to the carcharhinid Scoliodon laticaudus (the spadenose shark) and hypothesised that the hammerhead sharks may share a relatively recent common ancestor with that genus.

Bonnetheads are the smallest species in the family Sphyrnidae.
It is the smallest of the hammerhead-type (family Sphyrnidae) sharks, reaching an average of 3-4 feet in length in comparison to the scalloped hammerhead which grows to an average of 6 feet and the great hammerhead growing to almost 20 feet in length.
Coloration of the bonnethead ranges from gray to gray-brown, occasionally with a green tint.

Have students look at a list of the nine species of hammerheads that comprise the Family Sphyrnidae.
Scientists have long wondered why this small group of ground sharks evolved to have their unusual hammer-shaped heads.
Have students scroll down to Family Sphyrnidae and write answers to this question on their own paper: "According to this page, what might be one of the reasons for hammerheads' 'hammers'?"

Hammerhead sharks of the genus Sphyrna are members of the family Sphyrnidae.
The only other genus of Sphyrnidae, Eusphyra, contains only one species, Eusphyra blochii, the winghead shark.
The nine known species of hammerhead range from 2 to 6 m long (6.5 to 19.5 feet), and all species have a projection on each side of the head that give it a resemblance to a flattened hammer.

 The Social Lives of Hammerheads
Hammerheads, especially when they form large groups, are very shy and it is usually difficult for scuba divers to get close to them.
Hammerhead sharks form the family of Sphyrnidae, that includes eight species: the winghead shark (Eusphyra blochii), scalloped bonnethead (Sphyrna corona), scalloped hammerhead (S. lewini), scoophead shark (S. media), great hammerhead (S. mokarran), bonnethead shark (S. tiburo), golden hammerhead (S. tudes) and the smooth hammerhead (S. ygaena).
In the hammerhead shark, the front part of the head is flattened dorsoventrally and laterally increased to form what we call the "cephalofoil," or two wide flattened expansions that constitute the characteristic shape of a hammer.
