TWO FAMILIES from Spiddal, Co Galway have jointly purchased the local property known as Spiddal House, by private treaty, with a view to using it as a base for cultural tourism.
Spiddal House last came on the market in 1996 when it was purchased by a German family.
Designed by the renowned architect Professor William Scott, who also designed Spiddal Church, Spiddal House was built in 1890, extended in 1910 and extensively renovated after a fire in the 1920s.

The Spanish sculptor and founder of the Stone Art Gallery in Spiddal, Jesus Modia who died 10 years ago this year was remembered in Spiddal on Tuesday, August 11 when a commemerative sculpture was unveiled at Spiddal Craft Centre.
Jesus Modia was a native of Galicia in Spain who came to Galway in the early 70s and whose vision and inspiration led to the setting up of the Stone Art Gallery and subsquently the Spiddal Craft Centre.
Jesus was highly regarded in both the artistic world and locally in Spiddal and many artists and friends of Jesus were present for the ceremony at the craft centre which was organised by Karen Kenny of An Damhlamn, Udaras na Gaeltachta and close friends of Jesus.
