The great appeal of Spiderbait, particularly in the 1990s when their all-ages shows were a rite of passage for a generation of teenagers, was that they never separated themselves from their audience.
Spiderbait embody an era in Australia music that only passed a handful of years ago, but popular culture mutates at such a speed that there has been a profusion of trends and movements - some for the better, many for the worse - since.
Spiderbait was formed in 1989 on the triangle of greenery opposite St Kilda's Prince of Wales Hotel, where all three of them sat late one night, still high on adrenalin after a show by American noiseniks Dinosaur Jr.

Spiderbait's garrulous drummer, Kram, remembers well what he was like at the age of 15: "I was very pimply and a complete jock with a huge mullet," he admits without pause.
Following the cataclysmically catchy "Jesus" single, Spiderbait began their partnership with Universal Music in 1995 with The Unfinished Spanish Galleon of Finley Lake, which brought them to national prominence and earnt them a gold album.
After extensive touring locally and overseas, Spiderbait recorded their most complex studio creation, 1999's Grand Slam, which was followed by 2001's The Flight Of Wally Funk.

Spiderbait pulled everything out of their musical hats.
Everything about this band was diverse: from the wah-wah to fuzz guitar, the hooky to groovy bass, the country tapping to punk drum smashing, to the sharing of lead vocal duties between bassist Janet to drummer Kram.
Confident onstage, Spiderbait came off as rather polite, if not slightly quiet, putting their look completely at odds with their sound.

I first saw Spiderbait live in a smoky University hall in Melbourne in early 1995.
Black Betty has been one of the greatest cover songs in the history of rock n roll, the old cover being by Ram Jam of an very old Leadbelly song.
I cant believe how much Spiderbait had simply slaughtered this song into an annoying repetitive grunt.
