Spiegel im Spiegel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spiegel im Spiegel is a piece of music written by Arvo Pärt in 1978, just prior to his departure from Estonia.
"Spiegel im Spiegel" in German means "Mirror in the Mirror." This is referring to the visual effect of looking into a mirror with a parallel facing mirror behind the looker.
The effect produced is an infinite regress of images or a "hall of mirrors".

The version of "Spiegel and Spiegel" for cello and piano is played by Dietmar Schwalke with Alexander Malter and set at the centre of the album.
The expected track listing of Alina is: 1.Spiegel im Spiegel for violin and piano (Vladimir Spivakov, Sergej Bezrodny), 2.Für Alina (Alexander Malter piano), 3.Spiegel im Spiegel for cello and piano (Dietmar Schwalke, Alexander Malter), 4.Für Alina (Alexander Malter), 5.Spiegel im Spiegel (Spivakov/Bezrodny).
It should also be mentioned that Vladimir Spivakov is the original dedicatee of Spiegel im Spiegel (composed in 1978) and that this will be his premiere recording of the work.

Almost equally gentle is Spiegel im Spiegel, played as tracks 1, 3 and 5 and scored for piano and, respectively, violin, cello, and then violin again.
The album consists of several long movements/variations of two songs, "Spiegel Im Spiegel" and "Für Alina." Both are very similar in scope and lend themselves well to each other without battling for the spotlight.

Speigel im Spiegel was written in 1978, and Für Alina was written two years earlier.
These works are very early examples of Pärt's current style of composition, which he refers to as "tintinnabuli" – an allusion to bells and their tolling, triadic melodies.
So, to return to this review's opening sentence, part of what this disc offers is three performances of Spiegel im Spiegel two for violin and piano (the original scoring, I believe, because Spivakov was the work's dedicatee) and one for cello and piano.
