Bowler (cricket) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are several types of bowlers and most teams will have a variety available in the team to take advantage of pitch or weather conditions or known weaknesses of the opposition.
A spin bowler usually bowls quite slowly and puts tremendous spin on the ball causing it to bounce at an angle off the pitch, forcing the batsman to treat each ball carefully.
Generally spin bowlers give up the most runs but they all have "tricks" that they use to fool the batsman and get him out (such as the arm ball, googly, flipper, topspinner or doosra).

Fast bowling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bowlers who persistantly run onto the pitch can be warned, with three warnings disqualifiying a bowler from bowling again during the innings.
Spin bowlers on the other hand are almost always aiming for the good length but need a much finer control of flight and line to be effective.
Two seam bowlers are usually expected to bowl in tandem for the first 10 or so overs, after which time the ball may begin to swing and one or both of them is substituted for a swing bowler or a spin bowler.

Leg spin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A leg spin bowler attempts to flick the ball with his wrist in the act of delivery so as to cause the ball to spin anti-clockwise.
The description applies exclusively to right-handed bowlers spinning the ball in this manner - other forms of spin bowling are known as off spin, left-arm orthodox spin, and the very rare left-arm unorthodox spin where left-handed bowlers use an action that mirrors a leg spinner.
Good leg spin bowlers are also able to bowl deliveries that behave unexpectedly, including the googly, which turns the opposite way to a normal leg break, and the topspinner, which doesn't deviate significantly.

Left-arm unorthodox spin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In cricket, left-arm unorthodox spin – often known as slow left-arm Chinaman and abbreviated to SLC – is a style of bowling.
The bowler uses his wrist to spin the ball so that when it pitches it turns from off to leg for a right-handed batsman, i.e.
Very few specialist bowlers of this type have played at Test level: the South African Paul Adams is perhaps the best known recent practitioner, although his technique is highly unorthodox in every sense of the word.

DM's Explanation of Cricket - Bowling Styles
Bowlers who use a fast bowling style but bowl the ball more slowly are called medium pace bowlers - these are often players included in a team primarily for their batting.
Off spin bowlers are right handed bowlers who spin the ball so that, to a right-handed batsman, it spins from the off side to the leg side when it bounces.
Leg spin bowlers are right handed bowlers who spin the ball so that, to a right-handed batsman, it spins from the leg side to the off side when it bounces.

Cricket Web - Coaching - Spin to win
Flat spin bowling can be just as useful to a team in the right situation; at its most accurate, batsmen can be tied down to exceptionally slow scoring rates and should they need to score quickly, they can become frustrated and give their wickets away.
A spinner's run up (often called an 'approach' where slow bowlers are concerned) is still important in that a bowler needs to be well-balanced and travelling at a speed he is comfortable with when the ball is released, whilst the follow-through is one of the most often neglected parts of a slow bowler's action.
The bowler achieves this effect with a near-identical action by rotating his wrist 180 degrees (the back of the hand faces the batsman), so that the spinning motion imparted causes the revolutions to become clockwise, and the spin off the pitch to go to the right as the bowler sees it.

A spin bowler has a more ambling run-up and uses wrist or finger motion to impart a spin to the ball. The ball then spins to one side when it bounces on the pitch, thus also hopefully causing it to be hard to hit.
A swing bowler holds the seam of the ball at a certain angle and attempts to release the ball so that it spins with the seam at a constant angle.
Since the new bowler faces in the direction opposite that faced by the first one, the wicketkeeper and the fieldsmen shift their positions accordingly.

 Cricket Made Easy
Bowlers are allowed to polish the ball by rubbing it with cloth (usually on their trouser legs) and applying saliva or sweat to it.
If a bowler loses his grip on the ball during the delivery action, it is considered to be a live ball only if it is propelled forward of the bowler.
Bowlers also make use of the state of the pitch, which is quite crucial to the game, and is one of the things the commentators look at in great detail before the game begins.

Jamaica Gleaner - Selectors tied to the past - Friday | June 4, 2004
Another answer is that with left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed the one specialist spin bowler in the squad, there was not a spin bowler good enough to be selected.
If answer number two is true, if there was not a specialist spin bowler good enough to be selected over one of Edwards, Best, Lawson who was just returning to action after a long lay-off, and Collins, it suggests that something is really wrong with West Indies cricket and the selectors.
If Mohammed was not good enough to play on a pitch that many believed would have assisted spin as the match progressed, if he was not good enough to play over one of those fast bowlers, it is to difficult to understand why he was in the squad in the first place.

The Hindu : Sport / Cricket : Murali's `doosra' doesn't conform to ICC stipulation but should be allowed: UWA report
Calling for a modification in the ranges of acceptability of elbow angles for spin bowling, the report says that "the logic in reducing the margin for fast bowlers compared with spin bowlers is based on the lower speed delivery of this classification of bowler.
Particularly when one considers that the speed of his arm rotation is similar to that of a fast bowler and the only scientific data related to fast bowling suggested an increase in the acceptable extension threshold from 10 degrees to 15 degrees.
This raises the question of why 10 degrees of extension for a fast bowler is acceptable, with only 5 degrees of tolerance granted to a spin bowler whose arm speed is similar.

Leg spin - TheBestLinks.com - Left-arm orthodox spin, Left-arm unorthodox spin, Flipper (cricket), Off spin, ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
When the ball bounces, the spin causes to ball to deviate sharply from right to left (as seen by the bowler).
While very difficult to bowl accurately, it is the most effective form of spin bowling against right-handed batters as the spin takes the ball away from the batter rather than in towards them, which is much more difficult to deal with.
However, leg spin has again become popular with cricket fans and a successful part of cricket teams, as the contest between batter and bowler is perhaps more cerebral than the physical contest between batsmen and faster bowlers.

Googly   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
While a normal leg break spins from the leg to the off side, away from a right-handed batsman, a googly spins the other way, from off to leg, into a right-handed batsman.
The bowler achieves this change of spin by rotating his wrist from the normal leg break delivery so that the ball rolls out the back of his hand with a clockwise spin (from the bowler's point of view).
The googly is a major weapon in the arsenal of a leg spin bowler, and can be one of the bowler's most effective wicket-taking balls.

The ball spins away from the leg side, and this is where it gets the name leg break, meaning it breaks away from the leg.
This makes it difficult for the bowler to get the batsman out bowled or caught from a leg break, but it does mean there is a chance of leg before wicket, assuming the ball has not turned enough to miss the leg stump.

An Introduction to Ultra Cricket (Ken Sproat)
A bowler is like a baseball pitcher: he bowls (pitches) the ball at the batsman in an attempt to get the batsman out, while the batsman attempts to score runs from that same ball.
The bowler is helped by the other 10 men on the bowler's team, called fieldsmen, who are scattered around the cricket field in an attempt prevent runs and help the bowler get the batsman out.
A spin bowler is a slower bowler who causes the ball to deviate left or right from the "grassed pitch" by placing a spin on the ball as he bowls.

Was spin bowling once an easier art? - Cricket Web - Cricket Chat
True, but the whole point of spin bowling is deception to the point that hand eye co-ordination of a batsman cannot counter whatever a spin bowler is making the ball do.
A lot of bowlers today are not flighting the ball enough due to the one day cricket which is the reason they are not bein successful.
If you try to attack spin when the ball is turning, meanwhile, the chances are you'll pay for it sooner rather than later, so I don't think attacking batting has made potentially good bowlers less so.

The responsibility of selectors is to select the best team, that suggests that they should select the best bowlers, and there can be no question that Banks must be one of the top four bowlers in the West Indies.
The fact is, however, the West Indies no longer possess quality fast bowlers, and until they do, they should face the reality of the situation and go for their best bowlers.
