One is NGC 3115, also known as Caldwell 53, a lenticular galaxy (type S0) in the constellation Sextans.

I returned to the galaxy a couple of times throughout the evening to verify that i really was seeing the supernova and each time, with patience, i could just pick out objects (the supernova and the double star) at the correct location.
In Sculptor galaxy NGC 253 and globular cluster NGC 288 were visible and both fit in the same 30x field.
The galaxy was harder to find that i recall but the little planetary NGC 6818 just north of the galaxy confirmed the location.

Here is an image from the Sloan Digital Sky survey, it shows why the arms of this galaxy appear very mottled in many amateur telescopes, there are lots of bright nebulae and clusters in the spiral arms of this face on galaxy.
The center is a bright envelope which has an oval, very bright nucleus, all of which is elongated in the same PA as the main body of the galaxy.
UGC 5373 is the Sextans B Dwarf galaxy.

For users of larger instruments (>16") looking for a challenge, it may be possible to glimpse the tiny galaxy just to the right (as pictured in the bottom image).
This was my first look at this great edge-on galaxy in a large-aperture instrument.

There is only one object worth using your telescope on and that is NGC 3115, the Spindle Galaxy.
It is 9th magnitude and large telescopes are required to give any definition although a 6 inch should quite easily show the galaxies elongated shape.
