Spinello Aretino - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spinello was a pupil of Jacopo di Casentino, a follower of Giotto, and his own style was a sort of link between the school of Giotto and that of Siena.
After the sack of Arezzo in 1384 Spinello returned to Florence, and in 1387-1388 with some assistants covered the walls and vault of the sacristy of San Miniato near Florence with a series of frescoes, the chief of which represent scenes from the life of Saint Benedict.
In 1391-1392 Spinello was painting six frescoes, which still remain on the south wall of the Pisan Campo Santo, representing miracles of St Potitus and St Ephesus.

The restored artwork, "Conversion of St. Efisio" by Tuscan artist Spinello Aretino, is part of the 14th and 15th century cycle of frescoes that decorated about 2,000 m square of the interior wall in the Camposanto cemetery in Pisa, near the Leaning Tower.
Featuring artists such as Buonamico Buffalmacco, Piero di Puccio, Antonio Venziano, Spinello di Aretino and Benozzo Gozzoli, the frescoes were regarded as masterpieces of sacred art by the pre-Raphaelite painters, and became extremely popular in the 18 and 19th century with the English aristocrats on the Grand Tour.
The glue, the exposure to weather and, in a recent controversy, the use of ammonium carbonate as a cleaning solvent in the ongoing restoration, caused much of the paint to dissolve.

Painter, draughtsman and goldsmith, son of (1) Spinello Aretino.
He is first recorded in Siena, once in 1405 as recipient of a payment made to his father for work in the cathedral, and again in 1407, when he was named as an assistant in Spinello Aretino’s contract for the frescoes in the Sala di Balía in the Palazzo Pubblico.
His idiosyncratic style and eccentric figures, which appear to be in a state of frenzied animation, bear little or no relation to Spinello’s sober, more monumental approach, although both painters had the same delicacy of handling.

When Spinello first arrived at Arezzo, he took lodgings in the house of an artist, who, although he possessed no great share of genius, had contrived to amass considerable wealth.
With this daughter it was to be expected that Spinello would immediately be in love; but our young artist had left behind him, in his native village, a charming girl, to whom he was in a manner betrothed; and he was the last man in the world to look upon another with a wandering heart.
