 NASA Technological Spinoff Fables
Spinoff proponents overlook the fundamental difference between private profit-seeking RandD and federal expenditures that are labeled RandD.
The argument in favor of spinoffs is further flawed by its failure to distinguish the relative contributions of technology push and market pull in the transfer process.
The implicit assumption of the spinoff advocates is that the primary bottle-neck to technical innovation is the absence of new technology, rather than the absence of a market.

Report: Morgan Stanley reassessing spinoff - Boston.com - Business   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In April, the Morgan Stanley board authorized the company to pursue a spinoff of Discover, which was a part of Dean Witter Discover and Co. prior to the 1997 takeover of Morgan Stanley.
Discover had been championed by Purcell, the former head of Dean Witter who led the combined company after the merger, and the spinoff was seen as a concilatory gesture by the embattled CEO, who was under fire for allowing a number of highly regarded employees to leave the company.
Morgan Stanley has repeatedly stressed that the spinoff was not a done deal, and the board could ultimately decide not to pursue it further.

It was the spinoff concept that transformed California’s Santa Clara Valley from an agricultural area of commercial fruit orchards and vineyards into the world center of semiconductor development and production.
Spinoffs rapidly evolved into large companies and in turn, suffered their own depletion of talent as spinning-off proliferated.
During the decades that followed, the venture capital concept was refined, manufacturing cost control evolved into an indispensable discipline and entirely new management structures had to be invented to keep pace with technologies that moved into uncharted territory.

State: Audit: PRIDE spinoff is illegal
The St. Petersburg Times reported in July that PRIDE invested at least $10-million to establish spinoff companies in the past five years, even as revenues dropped more than 30 percent and its number of inmate jobs hit a 15-year low.
In return, the state is entitled to share profits, a provision that has never been exercised, and is the beneficiary if PRIDE shuts its doors.
The new spinoffs wouldn't be subject to the same marketing constraints as a prison labor company, plus they could launch other nonprison businesses that might eventually help PRIDE's bottom line.
