  Spinster: An evolving stereotype
The shift in the way we perceive spinsters is the subject of current academic research which shows that a person’s perception of particular societal roles influences the amount of stress or depression they experience when in that specific role.
Another aspect of the spinster stereotype is the relegation of the individual to the role of caretaker.
Unlike the spinster, the fact that a man is not married does not necessarily imply a deficiency in his character.

Spinster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A spinster (or old maid) is a woman who has never been married, though it is usually applied only to women who are regarded as beyond the normal age for marriage, which has varied between cultures and eras.
The notion of the spinster has been adopted by some in the late 20th and early 21st centuries as a positive and even empowering lifestyle choice, one not necessarily linked to romantic or sexual abstinence.
Historically, a spinster was a woman whom love had passed by, who had never “been chosen” for marriage or motherhood.

Spinster Defined   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In contrast to the traditional idea of a spinster, an old maid preferred to establish herself in society with the audacity and aplomb of a hero of sorts (Auerbach 112).
For many old maids the purpose of being unmarried was to dispel two primary fears of society: a female as a hero and a spinster as a spectacle of defeat of the family (Auerbach 114).
Spinster became figures of pity to Victorian society as women with no hope of ever being married, which is how they defined a woman's identity.

Spinster elders know what it's like to run and hide whenever the marital question was raised and that's the reason for living openly for young Leather Spinsters to see that a woman can live a fulfilling life alone.
Elder spinsters showed us that we didn't have to hide in any one of the societal reasonings to live and function in this society as unattached women, to be free to act on our desires.
By example they showed us that choosing to be a Leather Spinster whether by conscience or nature we should offer no apologies for who we are, and be unaccepting of the labels our society/culture may place on us if they are not a reflection of our true selves.

The modern spinster tends to avoid the mass-market ritual of “going out.” Instead, she spends her social time on more intellectual, creative, or yes, geeky pursuits.
Spinsters, as a rule, make time for our friendships, and put effort into forming quality bonds with people we care about.
Spinsters and the harried/married are fundamentally in opposite camps, so friendships between them are challenging.

 Topical Words: Spinster
It’s because of the Civil Partnership Act, which comes into force then and will permit a form of civil ceremony (which is carefully not being called marriage but a civil partnership) for gays and lesbians.
Originally, it was always applied to a woman (though that changed later), as in brewster (a woman who brews ale, a female job in a medieval household), maltster (a woman who makes the malt from which ale was brewed), and spinster (a woman who spins).
So many women were described in marriage records as having the occupation of spinster that by the sixteenth century it began automatically to be used for all unmarried women and became the legal description, as Thomas Blount wrote in his Dictionary in 1656, “for all unmarried women, from the Viscounts Daughter downward”.

Why "Spinster?" Who's Spinning? | SpinsterSpin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Let’s begin with the definitions: according to the Oxford Dictionary of Current English, a "spinster" is “a single woman beyond the usual age for marriage.” But long before the word became a moniker for old and unwanted chicks, "spinster" referred simply to women who spun, as in yarn.
Here’s my definition of "spinster": “A woman who has decided, for reasons that are her own damn business, to forego marriage and motherhood in favor of spinning herself an amazing kickass life.”
And so in the best sense, to be a spinster is to be less focused on the fact of our singleness, and more focused on the beauty of our existence.
