In elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays), a spiracle is found behind each eye, and is used to pump water through the gills while the animal is at rest (Fouts, 2003).
In the rays, the spiracle is much larger and more developed and is used to actively pump water over the gills to allow the ray to breathe while buried in the sand.
In elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays), a spiracle is found behind each eye, and is often used to pump water through the gills while the animal is at rest (Fouts, 2003).

Insect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The spiracles have muscle controlled valves, enabling the insects to avoid drowning in water or to prevent desiccation.
In certain types of water bugs the three pairs of the spiracles are covered by a pressure-sensitive membrane that help them sense their position in water.
The last abdominal spiracle and associated trachea of certain Lepidopteran caterpillars are modified into a tracheal lung adapted for hemocyte gas exchange.

The larvae present microspines, which are distributed randomly throughout the 12 segments of the body surface; the cephalopharyngeal skeleton varies in shape and extent of sclerotization according to larval instar; the second and third instars have relatively long processes (tubercles) on the dorsal, lateral and ventral surfaces, with microspine circles on the terminal portion.
The posterior spiracle of first instar larvae can be observed at the posterior end of segment 12, and by transparency, the formation of the posterior spiracle can be observed on the second instar cuticle, with two still incipient spiracular openings.
The posterior spiracle of the second instar larva is observed in the posterior end (segment 12), and the formation of the posterior spiracle of the third instar larva is observed by transparency, presenting three spiracular openings.

The posterior spiracle sp2 is located between the basis of the haltere and the mesomera.
Flight musculature is removed and the metathoracic spiracle is permanently sealed by epoxy glue.
To distinguish the changes resulting from the modifications of local spiracle gas conductance from those associated with alterations in total flight force production, we estimated kinematic and aerodynamic parameters in unmanipulated animals (see text) within a ±2% range of flight forces that match the maximum values shown in D (red).

Current Biology -- Lovegrove et al.
(A) shows that at st11, before spiracle invagination, there is an upregulation of Crb expression in the spiracular cells (arrowhead), which is maintained at later stages of development (B).
Arrowheads point to the posterior spiracles or their anlagen.
Note in (A), the apical constriction of the spiracle cells is recognizable by the higher levels of Crb.

CATF School Bus Particulate Matter Study - Clean Air Task Force (CATF)
In the third attempt to abate the crankcase emissions, we found that the Spiracle eliminated the PM2.5 self-pollution in the cabin but did not result in improvements in ultrafine particles, fl carbon or PAH.
The Spiracle reroutes the crankcase emissions back into the intake manifold of the engine, ultimately directing them through the exhaust system and away from the engine compartment, where they can be removed by tailpipe filtration devices.
In conclusion, this research suggests that the combination of DPF, Spiracle and ULSD results in a comprehensive elimination of all particle species measured and is the most effective solution for addressing school bus cabin air quality as well as improving conditions outside of schools.

Compartmentalisation of Rho regulators directs cell invagination during tissue morphogenesis -- Simões et al. ...
The honeycomb pattern of the adherens junctions in wild-type spiracles is completely disrupted upon expression of RhoN19 (arrows), and only partially affected by the dominant-negative form RacN17.
Two major classes of phenotypes are found (arrows): lumen defects, with broader and shorter Filzkörpers (i) and invagination defects, with Filzkörpers on the surface of the embryo (ii).
As germ band retracts, apical constriction and invagination of the spiracle primordium is clearly observed in the last segment of the embryo (A8).

Compartmentalisation of Rho regulators directs cell invagination during tissue morphogenesis -- Simões et al. ...
The cells belonging to the spiracle primordium (red and green) constrict apically (i,ii); the more anterior cells (red) rearrange around the A8 tracheal dorsal branch (DB) (iii) and invaginate first, occupying deeper positions in the spiracle.
In wild-type spiracles, a continuous line of Actin surrounds the Filzkörper, while in late Rho1 mutants this pattern is partially lost.
In i, ectopic Rho1 activation is detectable on the cell membranes, as opposed to the apically restricted pattern in the wild type (same confocal settings as the WT control).

news: Donaldson diesel oxidation catalyst system verified for use in California retrofit programs
In some configurations, the DOCs is combined with the Donaldson Spiracle™ closed crankcase filtration system, which controls particulate matter (PM) emission from the crankcase.
All systems, including the DOC + Spiracle and DOC only configurations, are verified as Level 1 device, i.e., they reduce PM emissions by at least 25% (and not more than 50%).
The DOC + Spiracle™ combination system will be sold on a retrofit basis for about $2,000 per vehicle.
