Spirit began work on a dedicated Formula One car, the Spirit 101, for 1984, but Honda switched their support to the Williams team, leaving Spirit to use the inferior Hart V6.
Despite a huge lack of funds, the team began the 1985 season with Baldi and the upgraded 101D, still with the Hart turbo.
Spirit was a Formula One constructor from Britain.

Mauro Baldi (born January 31, 1954 in Reggio Emilia, Italy) was a Formula One driver who raced for the Arrows, Alfa Romeo and Spirit teams.
When Benetton became Alfa Romeo's team sponsor in 1984, Baldi lost his drive, and joined the underfunded Spirit team until 1985.
In 1986, he switched to a Porsche 956 from Richard Lloyd Racing's outfit, returning to a works drive in 1988 with the Sauber-Mercedes team, with whom Baldi won the 1990 World Sportscar Championship, sharing the car with Jean-Louis Schlesser.

Thierry was understandably disappointed when his team-mate Stefan Johansson was chosen to drive the team's Honda- engined Formula 1 car in 1983, but Thierry raised sufficient sponsorship backing to drive for the Milton Keynes-based team for three and a half seasons, developing a reputation as an unflappable, smooth and very reliable performer.
He fought his way through Formula Ford into F3 and eventually took over the works Martini in 1981 which had been vacated by the F1-bound Alain Prost at the end of the previous season.
