Topic: Spiritchaser

Spiritchaser - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spiritchaser (1996) was the last studio album of Dead Can Dance before Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard went their separate ways.
It expands on their exploration of world music and like Into the Labyrinth, Spiritchaser was recorded at Quivvy Church, Perry's personal studio in Ireland.
The track "Indus" contains a melody that is very similar to the melody of "Within You Without You," a Beatles song that George Harrison composed with Indian musicians.

Dead Can Dance : Spiritchaser - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Dead Can Dance's final album Spiritchaser was something of an unusual release - it's not as much of an anomaly as the first album, but one can hear the duo wanting to stretch a bit more, however subtly.
Essentially, Spiritchaser is a summing up rather than a push forward; it features all the usual elements of a Dead Can Dance album instead of further explorations to see what else could be done.
Spiritchaser ends on a strong note, the gentle, mysterious "Devorzhum," a Gerrard-sung number that makes for a grand conclusion.

Standouts include the spectacular, and lengthy (at around 10 minutes), "Song of the Stars", a section of which is sung in Haitian; the aforementioned "Indus", built on Gerrard's amazing voice; and "Song of the Dispossessed", in which the narrator, through Perry's resonant voice, laments the loss of the old world to the influence of Christianity.
The best track here, though, is "The Snake and the Moon", which uses electric guitars and mediaeval choral vocals to create something that shows that Dead Can Dance are as hip to the contemporary as they are to the out-of-time.
SPIRITCHASER is a fitting final chapter to this band's fascinating work.

I'll agree that SPIRITCHASER is a departure from their earlier stuff--more tribal and less (do I dare say) Gothic.
Not their best release but I think the worst one is titled "Dead Can Dance." I don't have the CD in front of me, but I think it is the one with the Easter Island statues on it.
Spiritchaser just doesn't do it for me- the instrumentation is very elaborate and I think they sounded best when they kept it sparse and simple- as for their self-titled debut, it's easily my favourite Dead Can Dance album- it has bite to it.

Not for casual background listening or mentally agitated states, "Spiritchaser" has filled my days at times when I've needed to sit back (or lay down) and reconnect with life and a more peaceful point of consciousness.
"Spiritchaser" is also a very earthy, sexual CD for me. As the liner notes state, there is a belief that organic instruments, made from living creatures, then contain part of the soul of the creature and make each instrument the voice of the soul from which it was created.
That kind of reverence permeates the eight songs on "Spiritchaser," where the sounds and the voices seem to manage to seep into the listener's essence, touching hearts as gently as they touch minds.

In recent years the duo has taken to working from opposite ends of the globe, bringing a noticeable disparity to their work.
On "Spiritchaser" they share tasks; Perry's raspy, Sinatra-on-barbituates vocals converse with Gerrard's sanguine alto on "The Snake and the Moon." Many tracks find the pair trading harmonies like old stories over the fire.
It seems impossible that two people could distill so much music into the eight cogent, concise songs on "Spiritchaser." The union of world rhythms and the reunion of Perry and Gerrard is refreshing in a time of ethnocentrism and individuality.

One theory of how life evolved on the Earth involves the interaction of clay, water, and organics at undersea hot springs (like at mid-ocean ridges).
In that case, Europa might be more likely to have life, because Europa doesn't have as much total water as Ganymede, so beneath a Europan ocean is rock, while beneath a Ganymede ocean is more ice (higher pressure phases of ice, which are denser than water).
