In the Spiritual Baptist Church there was no organisational affiliation or structure, and the faith grew with the blossoming of individual churches - "camps", as they were called - established as and when the spirit gave guidance and instructions.
The Baptists suffered much persecution and prosecution resulting from the ordinance to render illegal the practices of the body known as the Shouters, and the order of the day was "beat and arrest, fines and imprisonment for the Spiritual Baptist".

 Why Converted Church-Membership - By Rev. J. O. Rust
Our contention is simply this: Baptist principles strictly applied would exclude from church membership all but the converted; whereas the principles of other denominations strictly applied would include in their respective church memberships some who are not converted.
If after joining a Baptist church, it is discovered that one is not converted, then it is his duty to withdraw, or it becomes the duty of the church to exclude him.
We contend that these requirements are the only true safe-guards for the spirituality of the churches; and being the only people who hold these doctrines in their purity and simplicity, we affirm that Baptist principles are the only tenets which will inevitably bring the churches to the New Testament standard of membership.

This is partly due to a loss of evangelistic zeal, partly due to drift of their membership to more conservative denominations, and partly due to the failure of one generation to pass on Christianity to the next.

Standing Up for Separation of Church and State is the Spiritual (and Historically Baptist) Thing to Do
At the heart of Baptist faith and practice is the Baptist belief in the individual’s direct relationship to God through the liberty of the soul to choose faith.
The Baptists, however, standing firmly by their avowed principle of the complete separation of church and state, declared it to be ‘repugnant to the spirit of the Gospel for the Legislature thus to proceed on matters of religion that no human laws ought to be established for the purpose.’”
Perhaps the shift in the view of some Baptists who seek to tear down the wall of separation of church and state is partly in response and reaction to what appears to be outright hostility against religion by the media and much secular teaching and discourse.
