 [No title]
Spiritual marriage thus appears paradoxically central and peripheral to medieval social and religious life, usually orthodox in its support of clerical authority but frequently heretical, rigidly conservative and yet potentially subversive, especially in so far as the practice arose spontaneously among the laity, often upon female initiative.
Further complicating discussion of marriage, and especially of women's autonomy within marriage, Elliott argues, is the movement of the church from periphery to center, and a concomitant change in its earlier egalitarian rhetoric.
As female spirituality was shunted to the side, the previous model of virginal heroism was appropriated and recreated in the form of a masculine flight from marriage and the world--the widely circulated model of St. Alexis--replacing a female conversion of spouse to chaste faith.

Spiritual marriage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spiritual marriage comes from the idea of "love without sex." It is a practice in which a man and a woman live intimately without having any sexual relationship.
Spiritual marriage is a concept that has a long history in Catholicism, and is also known as a "Josephite marriage" after the marriage between Joseph and the virgin Mary.
At times, spiritual marriage assumed a particularly scandalous form, in which a priest or monk would take a nun or laywoman as a wife, but claim to remain celibate, and claim that they slept in the same bed but did not engage in sexual relations as a sign of their own willpower.

 Spiritual Marriage
In a spiritual marriage, there is an ongoing flow of gentle kindness and genuine concern.
This is an active process, one in which you continually seek to understand your partner, to be in touch with his or her needs, and to respond to your partner with your whole being.
If you view your marriage as a spiritual process, however, then problems are not obstacles but opportunities for growth and learning.

Campaign To Privatize Marriage - Campaigns Wikia - A Wikia wiki
By privatizing marriage, individuals and religious groups would be free to define marriage as they see fit, while the civil unions that would replace them in legal contexts would strictly be considered legal contracts, and would be available to any pair of consenting adults, and possibly even to larger groups.
Many individuals see ending legal marriage (the marriage pronounced on you by the "power" of the state) as a way to restore spiritual marriage to its rightful place, as a union between two people and God in the context of their spiritual community.
Gays are not attacking marriage, everyone who has participated in taking the power to marry away from the church and their spiritual community is participating in an attack against this spiritual institution.

 The Meaning of Marriage
The first evolution of marriage was meant to aid in continuing our species in a somewhat safer environment from that of a lone woman being impregnated by a passerby, then left to give birth by herself in a nest of leaves under a bush somewhere.
This spiritual rite of passage between two people becomes a pact, a "heart pact", and it must be made and kept sacred in order for romance and ecstacy to survive within the marriage.
The marriage is comfortable, honorable, and allows the individual to maintain his or her own identity, while at the same time bringing to the marriage gifts of the spirit: humor, creativity, sensitivity, tenderness, understanding, and the gratifying sense of individuation.

Sermons - New Church in Australia, The -
But if a married couple, believing in the eternity of marriage and having love truly conjugial as their ideal, nevertheless find in the other life that there is a hitherto unsuspected internal dissimilarity that separates them, they will each be provided with a suitable partner with whom they may live as married partners in heaven.
These Sadducees were like that, and because their idea of marriage was manifestly restricted to the plane of the body, the concept of conjugial love, a love pure and clean above any other love of which mankind is capable, the concept of a spiritual kind of marriage, was quite beyond them.
In heaven marriages are spiritual, and cannot properly be called marriages, but conjunctions of minds from the conjunction of good and truth.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Mystical Marriage
In the Old and the New Testament, the love of God for man, and, in particular His relations with His chosen people (whether of the Synagogue or of the Church), are frequently typified under the form of the relations between bridegroom and bride.
Here the mystical marriage consists in a vision in which Christ tells a soul that He takes it for His bride, presenting it with the customary ring, and the apparition is accompanied by a ceremony; the Blessed Virgin, saints, and angels are present.
This festivity is but the accompaniment and symbol of a purely spiritual grace; hagiographers do not make clear what this grace is, but it may at least be said that the soul receives a sudden augmentation of charity and of familiarity with God, and that He will thereafter take more special care of it.

The Bahá'í Faith sees marriage as a foundation of the structure of society, and considers it both a physical and spiritual bond that endures into the afterlife.
By contrast, Buddhism does not encourage or discourage marriage, although it does teach how one might live a happily married life and emphasizes that married vows are not to be taken slightly (see separate article for details).

So from my experience, when Spiritual seekers make statements about the advantage, even necessity, of being single and/or celibate so that one can truly focus on their Spiritual development and not get sidetracked in the mundane world of here and now...These are statements I would disagree with strongly.
